Five years without his light in the world. How sad. He is still very much missed.
To remember him in his glory, I'd pick The Dove Affair. Atmospheric, very cold-warish, and OMG he is absolutely gorgeous in his trench coat. I love the hint of desperation mixed with bravado as he tries to hold on to the dove, figure out a way past the borders, keep the gaggle of annoying innocents safe AND deal with an adversary who is every bit as smart and devious as he is. This episode is actually in my top 10, despite zero Illya.
It was very cold warish, as you say. Perhaps why that turned me off from it. Still, those first season episodes, he just shone so brightly. They so wasted his talents in the seasons that followed.
I don't think I have one favorite. I have favorite bits, mostly, where he's at his most suave and debonair, saying something clever. Or the rare occasions when he's in casual clothes (not costumes like the safari getup) and he looks so different from usual. Or how nice he is to Kurt Russell in Finny Foot, showing he'd be a great dad. Or THAT KISS in Off Broadway ...
