I started this conversation with Beanie and then Rosy offered some suggestions, so I thought I would open it up a bit more.

I am taking part in the ‘Into a bar’ challenge.  In which a character of your choice walks into a bar and meets a character from the list of fandoms you are comfortable writing in.

Is the bar/pub in a city or in the country? When we were hiking in England/Scotland back in the 90's, we visited more than a few local pubs. Each one had its own local beer or ale on tap, yummy stuff like "Old Acorn Bitter." Women were "supposed" to ask for "a half," meaning a half pint. Men usually ordered a pint. Both were served in a glass, nearly always at room temperature ( ... )

An old time pub would be smoke-filled and have saw-dust on the floor. Most likely there'd be a game of darts going on, or possibly snooker. Maybe even a game of nine-pin skittles in the vicinty, though sometimes played outside.

People sitting on stools in the corners gathered around old wooden tables tables or sitting on benchs along the walls. There might even be a music session going on, with fiddles, flutes and such. Dark wood on the bar and walls, perhaps that way from age and the smoke.

Pint glasses for sure, but sometimes the women would drink glasses of beer (1/2 pint) instead of full pints. Depending where the story is taking place, might dictate which type of beer, ale or porter is popular. Looking forward to reading this.

"An old time pub would be smoke-filled"

although be aware for accuracy sake if youre having Jackie in a post 10th Doctor regeneration timeline - 2006 is when the Smoking Ban hits. All smokers relegated into the rain outside the pub to freeze.

I agree. We were there in 2007 and there was no smoking in the pubs we went into (for dinner) at that point.

Wasn't thinking current day when making my comments, and thinking pre-smoking restrictions.
