I don't have an issue with Cas. It does make sense for HIM. I guess, I just feel like Dean's comment was hollow. You're right. Like, i said, character-wise it does make sense. I feel like Dean's given up not only on hope but on everything. But his self-pity and self-hate is just getting on my nerves. I am completely behind his decision to go to Michael at this point. But I don't think he should be just ditching his friends and letting Cas go down this spiral to 5x4!Cas because he's upset and is too busy to really notice anyone else but himself ( ... )

Let’s see if this makes any sense.

Psychology mode:

Fandom is rather disappointed with Dean atm - not without a reason - because he’s making these stupid and/or selfish decisions that endanger him and his family, which, btw, includes his (boy)friend, Cas. (Seriously, Dean, what do you think will happen to your brother and your special angel friend if you say yes?)

Dean is, obviously, in a very bad place right now. I don’t think he’s actually-actually lost all hope, not like 5x04!Dean, but he is tired, disappointed, angry and has this we’re all gonna die anyway, so who cares? mentality. And I think that while his logic and his emotions recognise that telling Castiel to swallow a whole bottle of pills is a very bad thing indeed, he’s too down to do anything about it. He drags Castiel down with him, in a way, instead of being like Wait, that's bad; this is my friend! So, I don’t agree that Dean doesn’t care. I do agree, however, that the writers need to SHOW this right the frak now in a meaningful and explicit - rather than half- ( ... )

You're right, it's not that he doesn't care. I think Dean does, but it doesn't seem like he does, lately. Which is why I'm mad at the writers, too. But yeah, I totally agree with everything you've said here.

And yes, I love that icon. Very pretty! Thank you. :-)

I actually saw the scene out on the bench as an affirmation of their friendship, despite wincing at seeing Dean toss the pills to Castiel. Dean is totally apathetic throughout the episode - turning away from Sam, shrugging off the news about the townspeople growing more fanatical - but he still took a moment to empathize with Castiel. They're both trying so hard to lose themselves in either drink or apathy, but at least for that scene, they recognize how much the other was hurting.

Yes, I did like that scene. But I guess, I was more put off by how throughout the rest of the ep, Dean didn't seem to care. It's just really making me frustrated. I realize it's fairly in character, but I'm just becoming unhappy.

Sigh. As another friend of mine said: I want the sparkle back.

That's understandable. I'm a sucker for the angst, but it does become wearing. A definite risk of having such an apathetic character is that your audience can get turned off, too. :(

Hm, my feeling on this is that while Dean should be panicking a little he simply isn't in the right head space to care for himself let alone another person. Regardless of who that person might be. He made some effort with Castiel which is something considering his over all apathy to the situation. The fact that Dean didn't react as he has in the past in this episode speaks volumes for why he wouldn't act now.

If Dean can get into a better headspace I fully expect that ranty lecture to come hurling Castiel's way. If he can't then I don't expect Dean to be the one to stop any potential downwards slide, I kinda expect it of Sam since he is the change from 5.04 to 5.17 (and presumably beyond).
