Interesting comments. I can offer a theory as to why the show was popular: I think it's really different from most sci-fi shows that it attracted people, like me, who don't watch sci-fi (I don't consider XF total sci-fi), which makes it more accessible, contentwise. I don't watch any shows in that genre, which seems to me always about some ongoing, operatic mission of some group, but in Firefly, there isn't a mission, they're just a bunch of people thrown together looking to survive and make a buck. The writing's excellent, too.

Yeah, you can count on Whedon to give Inara the upper hand. Love the man.

I loved the cowboy theme! And the fusion with chinese culture reminded me of the 5th Element.

I think Keller's getting better, but again, I do agree with you that she's not quite right. I almost preferred RepliKeller.

Wait, I just watched 14 eps of Firefly and never once heard a marriage comment from River. Are you sure??

I like Firefly, but Buffy and Angel? I don't like them at all, so I guess I don't see the excitement over Joss specifically. Great idea, but I think it was the writing and characterizations done by the actors that makes me like the show.

Yeah, see if you can find that, because I can't believe I missed that. lol

I actually do like Spoike. But my issue with Buffy and Angel is first...vampires. God, so cliche. And then the show's themselves are very campy. Buffy to me doesn't exhibit much better acting or filming than Charmed. Angel, I never saw more than like three eps, but it struck me as exactly the same as Buffy.

Ah, see, I knew I hadn't heard it. I'd have remembered something crazy and amusing like that. Thanks for finding it, though!

Yeah, he is, but while he's cute, he's not Nick lea or Joe Flanigan cute where I'm willing to watch some truly God-awful TV just for them. lol

Something else Firefly and XF related -- in the episode "Oubliette," (which is Season 3) you can see a very, very young Jewel Staite as the young victim kept in the cellar. She's the one Mulder is trying to do CPR on in his completely unrealistic manner ;-)

You can also catch Jewel in a few episodes of Wonderfalls.

I got into Firefly for a while and enjoyed it, but never with as much all-consuming passion as XF. But I did go to two "shindigs" as the Browncoats call them to meet up with people and have a good time. That was cool. But there are only so many episodes and I didn't love every single one. The eps toward the end of the season are the best, I think, such as "Out of Gas". But my encycopedic-like knowledge of XF trumps the few episodes of Firefly any day.

Yes, I remember her in XF. She was also on one of my old fav TV shows, So Weird.

The end ones are definitely better, I think as with most shows. I actually found there wasn't an ep I didn't like...but I think it's because there were only 14. I was going to like most or none. They didn't have a chance to get those filler eps like 2Shy and such in there as XF did.

PS: Love that icon. I died when Jayne put on that hat. And then the Fed goes, "that hat makes you look stupid." Hilarious.

Oh, and also, despite the intense marketing drive, the millions spent on ads, and free screenings to get people interested in the movie and telling their friends, the film barely cleared its initial budget. Universal had much higher hopes for the film. I don't think we'll be seeing another one.

However -- the first XF movie wasn't exactly a mega earner either, and we're getting another one of those. See what 10 years will do for another Firefly film.

Oh, that's a shame. I'd thought I'd heard it had done well. But then, I wasn't paying too much attention at the time beyond..."isn't this based on an old TV show?" LOL

10 years. Wow. Well, who knows, indeed.
