Poll and Rant

Poll What's the Consensus?

I'm starting a new tag, which I'm calling fanfic rant. Now you all know I hate wankage, so this won't be that. There will never be a single fic named or person scorned because that's just rude and I'd hate it if someone did it to me. However, sometimes, I just need to ask the heavens why in God's name certain things make it into fics. ( Read more... )

Um, what about either or neither? I'm not a huge fan of making out, but when I do do it, I alternate between open and closed eyes. My partner always leaves his eyes closed though, so I never know whether he finds it creepy or not. But I like it :D

LOL Well, I guess you get lumped in with the first answer. Perhaps a poorly written question, but I guess I was just thinking, even if one doesn't always do it with eyes open, doing it at all would qualify as answer 1.

Anyway, interesting response! How does it work with open-closed? I've always found myself disoriented the few moments its ever happened where my eyes haven't made it closed, yet.

And not a fan of making out? Why? (If I may ask.)

I'm not a big fan of making out either. It's messy.

Isn't that less messy than, you know, the real sex act?

Oh I so agree with you about the crying! I tend to view it as the mark of either an inexperienced writer, or a lazy one. Because really its shorthand for "this character is extremely upset". Well as you say show us how this charcter, in their own particular way, shows he or she is upset. That is the challenge of good writing.

Or young writers. They don't necessarily have to be inexperienced. They can just be emo like I used to be.

Holy crap, am I ever guilty of this crime! I also had people passing out a lot due to emotional strain rather than medical reasons. One of my worst fics is a Diagnosis Murder story where Jesse cries every two minutes and Mark keeps passing out because he's worried about his son. It has to be the cheapest and most shameless form of smarm out there ( ... )

I see Krycek as barely keeping it together, actually. We see him more than once on the verge of tears in the show, so I don't find it a huge stretch. Humans cry, men are human, therefore men cry. You can take anything too far, and I'm sure I've overdone the emo at various times, especially when I was a newer writer. I try harder these days to put on my "guy hat" and try to keep the emotions on that level, but I think crying in some situations is not only expected but appropriate.

Hey, quick question - What the hell are we all doing awake and on your LJ? I've never seen this much activity around here at this hour.
