Unlike the first which was about the evolution of Charles and Erik as two people, this is the story of how Erik and Charles became Magneto and Professor X. But as we saw in XMFC, they don't evolve into these roles separately. Their mutant personas are in part response to their past, but also in response to each other and their desperate attempts to make the other understand. Thus, this is about that evolution; Charles and Erik together, becoming Professor X and Magneto. It's about their war, with themselves, each other, and what humanity has helped make them to be.
