I've had a long fascination (since we did The Great Gatsby in school... I never actually read it though) with the 'Jazz Age' for some time now - the world seems to be reminding me of the 1930s these days.
Seriously, what is a lido? I used to go to Ruislip lido all the time as a kid and I have no idea how to explain it to people. If you're ever down West London way, make a day trip there. It's like a tiny man-made beach -- though I don't think the water has been safe for swimming for decades now -- with a little park, a miniature train tour and a lovely wood to walk through.
Well in Italian it just means beach... I guess it can meen a fancy pool as well... now I'm confused too! Ruislip is just far down the other branch of the Piccadilly - didn't know there was lido round there!
That picture of the woods is lovely, will check out the rest of his set :)
Ohhhhh, it's Italian? I always wondered. Ruislip lido's actually quite nice, my friends and I used to ride our bikes down there in the summer and get lunch at the pub restaurant there. I think they have a giant chess board there too, if it's still there. Ah memories.
Definitely do check out the set, there are some stunning images. I remember the woods being a lot more gray and brown and usually wet, but he captures them beautifully. One of the woods (I think there are three sections, all protected) is called Mad Bess Woods, and there are a lot of rumors about who Mad Bess actually was. As a child I heard that she was tried and killed as a witch, but the more historical consensus seems to be that she was the wife of a poacher. There's a memorial to her in the woods and I believe a small cottage that used to be hers. I know I found an article a few years back that said they had actually found her remains and confirmed her to be a real historical figure and not just a legend, but for the life of me I can't find it now.
I love that umbrella that girl has in the second picture!
Are those pools partially outdoors? They're amazing either way. Love the song, I listened to it while I was reading the post and looking at the pictures! :)
I'm not really sure - some of the other ones in the set are outdoors, these look quite covered... Thanks for always listening, at least I know one person is kind of experiencing what I intended!
Also the last tuesday society sometimes does nice jazz and 30s themed events. I always wanted to get myself some 1930s clothes, particularly when I had my hair shorter...
The place is fantastic - let me know what you think of it if you go - I'm going to try and go next week, before exam stress gets me cooped up indoors.
That olympiad thing is so charming, I love how you have to find the clues! Last Tuesday society? I wonder where we can get 1930s clothes... I've never had the energy or knowledge (or money) to go vintage-shopping...
Last year the Chap olympics were during the week and people just showed up, but I'm guessing there were rather more than expected, so this year they're making it more of a treasure hunt, which I think is cool!
Last tuesday society are the people who did the ball I went to.
I've looked on ebay mostly without any luck, and tend to go through charity shops with the same results. I figure oneday somethings got to show up? Maybe?
It is - I suppose we can start by going to those establishments right? Anyway, I guess I'll pick up some similiar pieces if I ever find any, I'll leave it to chance for now :)
I so have to blog about The Chaps at some point - I do remember reading about on some inflight magazine somewhere!
