On the corner the former fire station is occupied by Buddhists; variants of yoga and mindfulness are practised there. Although I do get bored out here in flyover country, I take perverse pleasure in living someplace that is slowly crumbling. I simply cannot stand to live in a place where prosperity is on the march. I suppose that if prosperity took a different form, I might welcome it, but it seems everywhere to be as you say, an onrushing blandness.

And while the margins are, economically, marginal, people are able to affordably live there. I may be Metrocentric, but I've gathered in the last 20 years that here in the UK, in the US, and mainland Europe, space to Live, and create is more available at the crumbling edges. Your ongoing prowess as a songwriter and musician being part of the proof of this!
