I find that most white South Africans have weird family histories - sort of all over the place. It sounds romantic but it just feels confusing to me! LOL

My wife's family has a far more interesting history than mine.

Mine all came from the UK, and seem to have been a fairly dull bunch -- agricultural labourers, builders, pub keepers and politicans mostly.

My wife's ancestors came from all over, and ent all over. One branch originated in Canada, came to South Africa in the 1840s, and spread from there. One (my wife's great great grandfather) went to what is now Namibia and became an elephant hunter and general in the Herero army. His first wife was Herero, and one of the descendants on that side invented the name Namibia. His brothers and disters went to Australia and New Zealand and China and the USA and England, and one branch even returned to Canada, via a whole bunch of other places.
