Our dog Alexa dies

Jan 18, 2006 04:40

I woke up at 2:00 am, and could not get back to sleep. There was an e-mail message from Ione Evans in New Zealand giving details of a branch of the Green family we didn't know about, so I began entering them in our genealogy program. At about 3:00 I heard strange noises in the yard outside my study window, and called the dogs. Ariel, the older one ( Read more... )

I'm sorry to hear about Alexa's passing. She looked like a cute little dog.

Death of a pet is a real loss. I'm sorry to learn of it - and it seems strange, given Alexa's age. Will Ariel be the only lonely one?

Thanks for all the expressions of sympathy.

It was strange that an apparently healthy animal should suddenly take ill and die within an hour, since she wasn't very old. And we miss her, of course, and her funny ways: her vociferous squeaking when we left or returned by car. The way she would come into my study and ask for a blessing to be there (knowing she wasn't normally allowed inside). I would be sitting at the computer typing and feel this gentle pressure of a nose against my leg, and if I didn't say "outside", she would lie down next to my chair.

Did she, perhaps, lick at some antifreeze?

I think she may have been bitten by a snake or a spider, or stung by a scorpion. Or perhaps ate some poisonous mushrooms. There are mushrooms that appear after the rain, along with termites, and the dogs seem to like earing them. Perhaps there was a poisonous one among them.

It seems likely that she suffered from a particularly nasty form of biliary, a tick-borne disease that is very similar to malaria in humans. We have had other dogs that have suffered from this, and the symptoms are anaemia (pale gums and tongue), going off their food, lassitude. We took them to the vet, they got an injection and recovered. Bu this form is very rapid, and death can, as in this case occur within an hour of the symptoms appearing. Only a blood transfusion can help, and that can be difficult to arrange at short notice at 3:00 am.
