I think the Pullman books are worth a read, particularly the first two of the "His dark materials" trilogy. I doubt if I'll re-read them as much as a re-read Lewis or Williams, though.

About "we must talk" - Yes, I can see the need of a lonely old man and the need for human compantionship, yet being self-obsessed at such tmes of loneliness or ill-health is self-defeating, because one tends to become a bore., and drive people away.

A lot of online diaries are indeed like that. Diaries are strange forms of literature, which serve many purposes. Sometimes they are private, and one talks to oneself, and those bits are usually boring to others, and should never be put on line, because it is probably a waste of bandwidth and boring to others. But there are some ideas and events that one would like to share with others, and this is a good place to do it. It was the fact that most of your "fiends" are not boring that persuaded me to join LJ in the first place!
