I know a woman who got pregnant twice while on birth control. God can work around it. Although to be fair, I think Mary saying no would have been more like abstinence than wearing a condom.

Part of the problem is that the "birth control is evil" group doesn't consider the context. We have gone forth and multiplied. We have multiplied a lot. I don't think God would mind if we slowed down a little now.

I'm also pretty sure the main "birth control is evil" story was more about the guy not doing his duty to let his dead brother's name live on than it was about every seed is sacred. It wasn't so much that he was pulling out early but that by doing so he wasn't fulfilling his obligations.

But goodness knows we can't reinterpret the Bible to reflect the changes in society. This is why I sacrifice doves after my period.

Yeah, I mean, basically God told him, "Go bang your brother's widow so he can have descendants," and Onan went, "sweeeeeet" but pulled out early, so that he could bang the widow without his brother getting descendants. If I were God, I'd probably smite him for that too. "You IDIOT, this was NOT about you GETTING SOME."

The thing that bugs me about the "go forth and multiply" thing is that it was said to Noah and has family after they were the ONLY HUMAN BEINGS ALIVE. Of COURSE they needed to go forth and multiply. But now we've got BILLIONS of human beings on the Earth and we are no longer in danger of dying out. I think it's safe to stop breeding like rabbits.

Look at both of you! Putting things in context! That's crazy talk!

... Seriously, if people would just start actually paying some attention to what the Bible says instead of spouting off cherry-picked quotes, the face of Christianity would be a lot kinder... and make a lot more sense. (The same "But in context that means something completely different from what you've been preaching" logic applies to the quotes about homosexuality, too. And then if you try to account for the time it was written, well that's even more logical, adn therefore rarely done. -sigh-)

This thread cheers me immensely. Everyone, for the most part, is actually having a civilized debate.

original quote: funneh.
ongoing conversation: 10/10. would read again.

Abortion is a hot-debate issue, and always will be. Kudos to you guys for being able to address it rationally. (so far, at least) A lot of people seem to be on one side or the other because SHUT UP, THAT'S WHY.

I did hear in Catholic school that ZOMG BIRTH CONTROL = EVIL. By then, of course, I was old enough to know better.

But in the same breath, I was taught that God is ultimately unknowable to mankind. God's intentions, God's will, and the means God employs to bring about His plan, cannot be perceived or comprehended by humanity except where God Himself chooses to reveal His plan to us. And even THEN, it's gonna be fuckin' wacked.

So if God is ultimately unknowable, who the hell is anyone to presume that the free will we all practice on our own bodies and lives isn't what God wants?
