I've only known you all of five minutes and you are totally blown my mind in a great way! I have no qualms about fire-arms (well considering my career path you would hope not), only the people who carry them with the wrong...intent is the word I'd use. I've often wanted to take up re-reational shooting, but Australia's gun laws make it difficult and even if a permit is obtained, it's often not worth the harassment. So I kinda put it aside.
It's great to see someone who shares my view on concealed weapons. I don't carry a gun, but I do carry a knife within the legal limits of where I live. I will defend myself and have taken lessons on dos and don'ts. It's not a NEED but an assurance of my safety. I don't go out of my way to provoke fights or flash a weapon. :P (besides who knows when you need to cut a cable or open a box ;D)
Ah, I'm quite glad to hear a kindred view on the matter! That is precisely why I carry-- not because I'm a badass, not because I want to get arrested for brandishing or some shit, but because I want to have assurances when I get lost on my way home in downtown Detroit. Or when my husband leaves for a week on business and I'm staying alone two blocks from the ghetto. Or when a client calls me up to come to her house and it turns out that she lives in a terrible neighborhood and I spend the whole ordeal deeply regretting that I came but at the same time being tremendously thankful I'm carrying a 9mm under my coat. :P
Though as you mentioned, recreational shooting: great fun, and that is the real reason I'm interested in firearms. Honestly the CPL is a great perk: it enables me to dodge the 10-day waiting period for purchasing new handguns. ;D
I carry a knife as well at all times, but it's more for the purposes you mentioned: cutting a cable or opening a box. :D
