Part One: Scratching the Surface

Remus looked up from his writing at a soft knock on his bedroom door. Glancing over at the clock, he wondered whom it could be at this hour (Sirius would have just waltzed in without knocking); Remus laid down his quill and got up to answer the door. Throwing the bolt back, he cracked open the door just enough to reveal a pyjama clad Tonks.

“Hullo, Remus,” she said softly. “I just got relieved by Hestia but needed to drop my report here, so I’m staying the night. I was just turning in when I noticed the light from your room. Mind if I come in?”

Silently, Remus pulled the door open enough for her to enter his room. Tonks ducked under his arm, and then settled herself on the end of his bed. “Make yourself at home,” he finally said.

“Thanks, I will,” she replied back, grabbing one of his pillows and placing it behind her back. “Comfy.”

Giving her a look of askance which earned him a cheeky grin in return, he settled back on his bed. “So…what shall we discuss at four in the morning?”

“Oh, I didn’t realise it was so late. I mean, I did…It’s just that we haven’t seen each other in a few days…” she trailed off, playing with a loose thread on his blanket.

Remus grinned at her. “Did you miss me?”

Tonks made a face, and then said, “Maybe a bit…”

“You missed me.” He couldn’t keep the glee out of his voice.

“All right…I did. I can only talk to Sirius so much and entertain the children with morphing for so long without getting bored. You stimulate me.”

“Nymphadora, trust me, you would know if I was stimulating you.”

Tonks’ dark eyes went wide. “Oh! I meant stimulating conversation! Oh! You! You know what I meant!” Scooting up the bed to where he was, she whacked him gently round the head.

Remus chuckled. “The look on your face was so worth it. Priceless.”

She glared at him as she settled next to him and against the headboard. “So…where have you been? Sirius isn’t telling.”

“Top Secret…can’t tell.”

“Remus!”

“Nymphadora!”

“Ooohhh…!” Tonks glared at him, annoyed.

“You’re so easy,” Remus told her as he leaned over to put his quill and parchment away in the bedside stand.

“I’m only easy with you,” she quipped.

They exchanged a look, and then both burst out laughing. “Ssshhh…Sirius is right next door,” he warned.

“Are you in contact with the werewolves?” Tonks asked him as he sealed the drawer with an upward flick of his wand.

Remus jerked his head around in surprise. “How’d you…?”

“Well, Hagrid is on his way to the giants with Olympe Maxime. So I figured you were…”

“You’re a very brilliant young lady, Nymphadora Tonks,” he told her quietly.

Her cheeks turned as pink as her hair, but she asked him worriedly, “You’re being careful, aren’t you?”

“Careful? Why would I have to be careful around my fellows?”

“You are nothing like them!” Tonks said vehemently. “Nothing!”

Remus was silent for a few minutes before he hoarsely told her, “Thank you, Nymphadora.”

“You’re welcome,” she told him, looking slightly mollified. “But don’t call me Nymphadora, Remus! I’ve told you that repeatedly!”

“It’s your name!” he cried.

“Ugh! I despise it.”

“Why? I think it’s a beautiful name.”

“So…what’s it like to be a… Er… Kiss a werewolf?”

This time his eyes went wide. “Kiss…?” he asked, with an arched eyebrow. Remus knew, given how naturally curious she was, what she was going ask as first. But he wondered how then she decided on asking about kissing of all things instead.

Tonks’ face was now Gryffindor scarlet. But taking a deep breath and releasing it, she repeated, “Kiss.”

“I don’t know.”

“Why not?” she cried.

“I’ve never personally kissed one.”

Tonks looked at him for a second, and then lunged at him. “You’re a git!” she shrieked.

Remus laughed and held his hands up to ward off her blows. “You asked for it! Asking me a question like that!”

“I hate you!” Tonks shoved him one last time, and then settled back against the headboard. “It’s always the quiet ones,” she muttered to herself.

“What’s that supposed to mean?” he asked indignantly.

“The quiet ones are the ones you’re supposed to look out for. People always watch the loud ones, but it’s the quiet ones that are the real trouble.”

Remus laughed. “I just told you how brilliant you are. That is very true about the quiet ones…direct from a “quiet one”.”

Tonks giggled, then squinting at the clock on the bedside stand, she said, “Bloody hell…it’s nearly five. I’ve got to crash for a bit. Have to be in the office at nine.”

Remus pulled a face. “Going to the office is one thing I don’t miss.”

“Want to switch lives?” Tonks asked him. “Just for a day.”

“Trust me, Nymphadora, you don’t want my life,” he told her quietly.

Ducking her head, Tonks’ face went scarlet again. “Oh! Remus! I’m-”

“It’s all right,” he cut her apology off. “I know you didn’t mean anything by it. I’ve told you before that I’m very happy that you see past the werewolf to Remus.” Tonks was quiet. “I’m serious, Nymphadora,” he said, tipping her chin up so she was looking him in the eye. “I’m very pleased you see who I am.”

“Okay, Remus,” she said in a small voice. “I’m going to bed before I stick my foot in my mouth again.” Smiling, he watched her scoot off the bed. He followed her, opening the door before she could. “Good night, Remus.”

“Good morning, Nymphadora.” She crossed the corridor to her assigned room. As she opened the door to her room, he spoke again, “Oh, and Nymphadora, if you are ever interested in kissing a werewolf, let me know. I’d be quite happy to oblige. Sleep well.” He caught her eyes going wide as he closed his door and leaned against it.

Remus grinned at her quiet knock a few moments later. Reopening his door, she re-entered his room, then turned to him and said, “Remus, I’d like to know what it like is to kiss a werewolf.”

Closing his door once again, he said to her, “Come here and I’ll show you.”
