Lies! The reason you don't see Chickenberries in the fossil record is because of the sheer magnitude of their tastiness. One chickenberry was born, and then the salivary glands of an epoch worth of sabretooth tigers left slimey trails.
I would think that the plant that managed to produce a chickenberry would still be around even if the berries were eaten. Sabertooths were not known for their love of salad.
