My car appears to have blown a rod or had the transmission disintegrate in some interesting way I'm not terribly familiar with yet. This is annoying, but strangely not a catastrophic thing ( Read more... )

That was less dramatic than it could have been.

Although it's never a good thing, there are better times for these thigns to occur, and we seem to have both been lucky in the exploding transmission department, as mine happened before I got out of the parking lot, and I'd taken the day off of work.

So it didn't happen when I was on my way to get Miss G from daycare later in the afternoon, when there would have been absolutely no way for the husband to be able to get from Bellevue to White Center on time.

I'm very surprised you're having it fixed. How much is that going to cost? Is it even worth it?

When the engine blew on my last Celica, they quoted me a price above what I even paid for the car years before. You can likely pick up something new for a LOT cheaper, especially with all the people wanting to offload their cars lately. I know, I browsed private-party car listings daily between October and December. There's a lot out there that people just plain want to get rid of well below market value.

But they don't make new Geos!

I have to figure in the cost of driving something inefficient in the fuel department...which is about $1000/yr. Even with good gas prices, it's still an easy decision to make. :) My car has about $5000 worth of cost savings to bank on me fixing it right now, not counting the cost savings of having really good gas mileage again would bring.

I suppose it would be different if I could lay my hands on another GEO, but they don't make them anymore, and usually the owners are rabid about keeping the damned things running so only teenagers who don't want to be seen in one or people going into nursing homes tend to sell them. In a quick check, there were no GEOs for sale in a 50 mile radius.

Yeah... I forgot to budget paying for premium gas into my budget. Not supposed to put regular in my new car. :p

Ask Jessie. She's the one who works for the company that could be hiring. And well, I don't fire people anymore. :)

Quite the coin-ki-dink. I just got my car fixed after over a year of belching and sputtering. Turned out to be a part that didn't usually fail.

Almost $6K later, I remind myself that it only cost $2K to buy. Now it's almost completely rebuilt.

Lemme tell ya, having the emissions test go from 563 ppm hydrocarbons to 13 is just joyous.
