Walgreen's was selling 30-pack bottles of their store-brand Claritin for 1/2 price. One of these bottles is free with a rebate. At 1/2 price, it's considerably cheaper to buy 3 30-packs than one 90-pack

In my case, even generic Allegra was booted from the first tier to the third tier. By the way, I have no idea what that actually means in terms of price, but I'm sure it's not good. I just got 120 tabs of Claritin for $21, though. ;)
There seems to be this notion among insurance companies that "the other stuff is just as good, don't be a baby" but I remember taking other stuff (I forget what) when I was younger and it never worked as well. I guess if it comes down to it, I'd be willing to pay more for it during the peak problem months (April, May, June) if necessary.
Claritin works for me, luckily, but I have a different issue.
Back when Claritin was on-patent, I had a prescription for Claritin-D, which had claritin coupled with pseudophedrine. That stuff worked wonders for me, and at the time my Dad worked for Schering-Plough so we actually got the stuff for free.
Then it went off-patent, all seemed well because I could just couple Sudafed with cheap Costco generic claritin. But now it's so freaking difficult to get pseudophedrine. All there is is phenylephrine which doesn't do a damn thing as s decongestant. Stupid meth labs!
I once took Allegra-D for a while because I ran out of the regular kind. I was a mess for weeks. Constant state of panic, even my heart rate started to go up. I had chalked it up to overwork + wedding planning until one day I realized my reactions were way out of proportion. Then I put 2 and 2 together and quit the stuff, I felt better the very next day. I avoid pseudoephedrine nowadays.
But you're right that phenylephrine is pretty useless.
I started out on Claritin, then switched to Allegra as soon as it hit the market. Claritin handled my outdoor allergies OK, but it could never tackle the indoor mold & dust issues or the animal dander problem. Hopefully it works out for you!
