  • musesfool: seriously, knock that shit off - when you fuck up that massively, you damn well should get called on it. It's not dogpiling for people to talk about it, and your authorial embarrassment or tears is not more important than the real hurt you've inflicted on people who've been othered or erased by your work. -

  • dhobikikutti: Warnings for *isms? - I was thinking about what I would do if people actually did label their fic with "racist tropes" in the same way that they label their fic "dubcon" -

  • redsnake05: Difference. Yeah, that. - "Worrying about offending someone" and "Being thoughtful and working to be a better person" - I don't see the difference. If you do the latter, then you'll be a long way on the road to making sure that the former doesn't blow up on you. -

  • kaz: the h/c bingo post - Also, seriously? Enough with the "you are saying we're not allowed to write about these things!" I mean, there seems to be a computer issue here - things are turning up on my monitor as "if you write about X, please do your research and try to write it respectfully" and on other people's as "our ninja attack squad is coming for your computer. You will never write about X while we still live!" Funny error, that, I usually just get 404s -

  • poisontaster: One Last Rant Before Bedtime - It seems to me that any number of people want to pitch these discussions in legal terms. Looking aside from the glaring logical error that there is no fandom governing body capable of wielding institutional power to stop, prevent or otherwise punish an "offending" person, let's look a little closer at the idea of "law", shall we? -

  • wintercreek: everything has changed - "Affirmational fandom is interested in this story; transformative fandom is interested in the meta-story, the ur-story. Affirmational fandom likes Kirk and Spock having gen adventures, likes Holmes and Watson solving gen cases. Transformative fandom says, 'What if Kirk and Spock were Holmes and Watson solving cases?'" -

  • telesilla: Danger! Faggots! Dykes! Perverts! Queers! Heterosexuals! - So please, fandom, can we stop acting like sexual identities are so scary and dangerous that people need to be warned for them? Can comms and fests stop asking people to warn for sexual identity? Can people stop thinking that it's cute and funny in a "hee hee, I'm so naughty" way? Can we move to a less judgmental system? -

  • sasha_feather: Some concerns about hc_bingo - Many of these "cliches" listed are real disabilities and problems that affect real people. Many of them are triggering. Many of them are lifelong, difficult issues and many of them are wrapped up in people's identities. The potential for problematic portrayals of disability in this challenge seems especially high. -

  • neo_prodigy: Queer Tropes - As many of you know, June is the month of LGBTQ Pride and I couldn't think of a better time to call out a few tropes that inundate comics and media when it comes LGBTQ characters/themes. Tropes that if I never see again for the rest of my existence, I'd be eternally grateful. -

  • dagas_isa: Hoo boy, thoughts on yaoi (let me tell you them). - Like I can understand boyslash as feminist from the perspectives of women enjoying an aspect of their sexuality normally that's normally invisible, or creating something that's largely by and for a female audience, and even from the perspective of reclaiming male experiences and male space. However, the first part isn't relevant to the expression of my sexuality, the second part is also largely true of het and femslash communities, and as for the third, I think it has more to do with how people negotiate power dynamics and how they choose to own them, than any particular act. I don't want male spaces and experiences, I want non-male spaces and experiences to be treated as valuable and worth writing about. -

  • rawles: a quick note - Along this same vein, deciding that you can defeat the misogyny of the source material/relationships in the source material by removing the women and replacing them with/focusing entirely dudes similarly reeks of bullshit. Because obviously the feminist way to deal with a misogynistic narrative is not to balance out relationships or illuminate and explore the female characters, but to ignore them! Riiiight. -

  • opusculus: The facts of the MZB case - And I wanted to write out the actual tale of what happened with the Marion Zimmer Bradley case out while my mind's still fresh from looking it up and I can still dig up most the links for my own future reference. -

  • soundingsea: on commenting - Okay, so I have a confession to make. Sometimes I read fic and don't comment. And I should, and I mean to, but I just don't get around to it for whatever reason. And I'm a fic writer, so I know exactly how much the writer of that fic would appreciate a comment! Anyone else wanna fess up? -

  • lothy: Tips and Techniques for Saving Stories from the Internet - Many people like to save stories from the Internet to their computers, whether for easy reading offline, or to keep permanently. However, it can be a very time-consuming, frustrating process. So I have compiled a list of tips and techniques for making saving stories easier, quicker and resulting in fewer files. -
