For me, a POV works when it doesn't draw attention to itself. There are stories you read that feel clunky because of their POV, and that's when you know they need a shift. This read seamlessly.
I think that this kind of "mythic" voice is suited to a more distant POV, too. But you're right. Most of the time you don't want to notice the writing. Most of the time.
