"Invert, the Invertebrate" is also way too non-specific to be a real mascot.

True, but "The Moleskine Mollusc" was was too much of a hipster to appeal to the popular audience.

It wasn't a Cole Porter song, either, just the first draft. "When they invert the invertebrate/ It breaks backs like wow, 'cause backs are so tender..." Then he saw that "Beguine" fit better, so...

I have played Evert the Invertebrate before. The reward for playing was buttery lobstermeat.
