I saw Peau d'Âne as a high schooler with my French class in the late '70s. It always stayed with me. If you haven't read it, I highly, highly recommend Deerskin, by Robin McKinley. It's based on the same tale, and it's gorgeous, and grueling, and ultimately intensely healing.

PS: I'm looking forward to reading your Merlin-ified take on the story!
