Summary: Arthur's reaction to Merlin's insult. (I thought someone had to have a go.)
Arthur arches an eyebrow and Merlin takes a hurried step back, sensing that he has just brought up a subject which should have been left well alone.
"Ah yes. I knew there was something we had to talk about, Merlin."
He steps forward slowly, a smile on his face which is dangerously casual and which Merlin knows is nowhere near as unconcerned as it seems. He begins to wish he could get away with magicking a hole under himself. Or maybe Arthur. A big one.
"Well, Sire, you see, I was a little, erm, a little under the weather, at that precise moment in time, and not in control of all my, er, faculties, so I think it best if we just disregard anything and everything I may have...unwillingly expressed in your general direction."
Merlin looks hopefully at Arthur, who is still smiling disturbingly.
"Clot. Pole."
Any hope Merlin has disappears into the imaginary hole that is looking more and more worth its weight in firery executions.
"I believe that was the expression you used, however unwillingly, in my general direction, was it not?"
Arthur steps forward again, crowding Merlin back against the wall of the bed chamber.
"Erm, I don't really remember actually," Merlin replies, attempting to slide along the wall to the safety of the door. His retreat ss halted by Arthur's finger slipping inside his belt and he lets himself be dragged back into place.
"Really? You don't remember? I have to say, you seemed quite vehement at the time. Odd you can't recall it now."
"Well, I thought we had already established that I was under the weather and things were to be disregarded."
Arthur raises his eyebrow again and put his face a little closer to Merlin's, lowering his voice as he does so.
"Oh, I don't think we can do that now, can we?"
Merlin swallows as Arthur reaches up and rests his elbow against the wall over Merlin's shoulder, jabbing his other finger rather sharply into Merlin's chest.
"You know, Merlin, I have been called many things in my time. True, most of them have been terms of adoration or honorifics, being as I am, the heir to the throne of Camelot, but still, clot pole is one that never been used. In fact, before that day in the stables, I had never even heard it before. But that's the odd thing. You see, I've heard lots of new things from you. The surprising thing is, that considering that I am, as I may have mentioned, the very important and very royal heir to the throne of Camelot, a large number of them have been insults. Odd, wouldn't you say?"
Merlin winces and bites his lower lip, staring resolutely at a small section of brocade of Arthur's jacket.
"What is even more surprising is the fact that I find all of this terribly..."
Merlin shuts his eyes, waiting for the inevitable insult, smack to the back of the head and the order to go and lock himself in the stocks.
"Attractive."
Merlin opens one eye and stares up at Arthur.
"I'm sorry?"
Arthur nods, still resting his elbow on Merlin's shoulder, though the finger he had been jabbing at Merlin is now gesturing in the air.
"I know, I know, it confuses me as much as it confuses you, but there you go. Coupled with your dangerously sharp cheekbones and collarbones that you have on show much more then is strictly necessary for anyone who isn't a whore, I've found myself being strangely attracted to you."
Merlin thinks for a moment, before opening the other eye and frowning at Arthur.
"Well, er, I suppose that's...a whore? I don't have my collarbones out like a whore!"
Arthur frowns and tilts his head. Merlin coughs and carries on.
"But that's neither here nor there at the moment. So, attractive...I see. Is this...is this a good thing?"
Arthur pouts his lips for a moment, his face the picture of deep thought.
"Well, I think so. I mean, this doesn't seem too bad, does it?"
Arthur grinds his hips against Merlin's, and Merlin all of a sudden finds Arthur's strange new attraction to him and his insults much less disturbing than a moment ago. His eyes widen and he stretches up onto his tiptoes, ignoring the cocky smile that spreads across Arthur's face.
"See, not so bad."
