Adapted from a recipe I found on allrecipes. The lemon juice is really what makes this one.

Sounds like it may be adapted from dal.

Possibly, though most dal curries I've had have a somewhat different spice mixture. And are built in a different order, by pureeing the onion and tomato and frying it in ghee.

Still there are definitely many similarities and there are many, many ways to make dal.
