Arthur sits in the ebony framed window of the hunting lodge and looks out on the snowy landscape beyond. The fire roars at his back and the room stifles hot. It is too hot. It is far, far too hot for the man used to the cold stone confines of enormous, drafty halls. The wood of this place is warm and hums with life. He puts down the dagger he’s been sharpening and swings wide the window fitted with thick wavy glass. The panes aren’t quite colorless, instead holding the slightest hint of blue within their transparency. When they no longer distort the view, everything that spreads before him is white. The crystalline flakes of cold have drifted and piled until they reach as high as his roost in the dark wood enclosure. He picks the dagger up once again and loses himself in the deep blue reflection of the darkening sky in the perfect polish of its blade. The sun has just set but the black of deeper night has yet to fully stain the vaulting firmament. The moon is full, an enormous silvered disc just peeking over the horizon, the promise of splendour pregnant in her shape

The music overwhelms him. The lights blind him. There they are, all his friends, dancing to the staccato rhythm. They look so happy together, in the arms of their loved ones. The tall redhead in the next table pulls his beautiful, brown-haired and -eyed girl up in anticipation of the slow song soon to follow. She laughs and hits him, but follows him all the same
He looks down to his untouched drink
He really should be getting home to another night of endless waiting for something-someone-who’ll never come. He doesn’t belong here, not among the couples, not when he’s lost so much before… No. He’s not going to think about that, not in this life time
He gets up to leave, he turns to the door, and walks out. He never ever looks back. Except he does. This time.
Arthur is like a sun and the world revolves around him. He looks happy, drunk, and carefree. He doesn’t need the complications Merlin’s memories would bring him. He doesn’t need the heartache. He doesn’t need Merlin.
So, finally, after all this time, Merlin does what he’s always refused to do: He says goodbye.

Drabble or Excerpt: he razor slid easily over Merlin’s skin, carrying away all traces before it, and Arthur ached when he thought how horrifyingly simple it would be to press a little harder, a little deeper, to cut in until the flesh parted and the red blood showed through. The thought aroused him even as he grew frightened of it, of himself-for did not Merlin’s blood haunt his nightmares, the copper heat of it spreading in a shipwreck sea?-how should he ever bring himself to harm Merlin?
Arthur pulled the razor away to wipe the blade, shaking beneath the force of such thoughts and doing his utmost to ignore the liquid which was rolling up out of his cock to make it slick
He thought of stopping, of running, when Merlin’s face was still only half-shaved: a farcical look on even the gravest of men.
Merlin’s lips were parted, and as Arthur stared at him in the agony of newfound confusion and desire, he noticed that Merlin was breathing in shallow, quiet pants, his hands clenched tightly to his sides. Yet he did not seem afraid, Arthur realised, and as his gaze travelled it fixed on Merlin’s erection-curved to his belly and just as hard and dark as Arthur’s.

His narrow feet slip silently on soft soles, out, out to the edge of the battlements. He casts his eyes beyond the walls of Camelot and Albion is all he can see. It stretches far beyond the curve of the horizon. The moon is shining, full in the dark mantle of the night sky. Her light caresses him, his soul sister. He is a creature of her like. A bright shining skin surrounded by inky darkness, pierced through the center with deepest blue, all dusted in silver smudges. He glides forward and joins her, over the edge and he's falling, falling. He could arrest the dive, moderate the plunge, hover and land but instead he wills acceleration. He rushes to a long overdue convergence with Moon's mother, Earth. He has been too long from her embrace and now they will finally be rejoined as one. From dust and shadow has he come, to dust and shadow now he returns. And as he consummates his conjugality a dark veil draws over the land.

Merlin couldn't believe Arthur was standing in his apartment. His glinting armour and red cape seemed at odds with the laptop at his work desk and television. Arthur ran his fingers over the each new invention, looking bewildered and lost. Picking up the remote Arthur examined it carefully and accidentally pressing the on button. With a yelp, Merlin couldn't help but laugh as Arthur jumped back, hit the coffee table and crumpled to the floor. Making his way back into the living room, Merlin grabbed the remote where it had fallen and turned off the television as the news anchor told of another bout of civil unrest not too far from where Merlin was living
He leaned down and clutched Arthur's shoulder
"Don't worry, it's just a television," Merlin said
"What sort of sorcery have you been practicing Merlin?"
