are there any fics where uther has a soft spot for merlin? like he slowly warms to him over time or has respect for him because he's saved arthur.

I once read an mpreg fic where he warmed to merlin through the pregnancy and then actually ended up really protective of merlin. so mpreg fics are fine :)

I don't know any fics that meet your request exactly, but this one is kind of similar. It is set in modern times and after Arthur comes out Uther goes to Merlin and Merlin becomes a sort of gay tutor to Uther.
