I'm sorry your first read for the experience was such a rough one. I could swear I either read something similar about this book recently or another SF book...an overabundance of seemingly endless detail.
I've been in the mood for more military SF right now. About half-way through Andromeda's Choice right now, the sequel to Andromeda's Fall which was released at the start of the year. Dietz writes engaging military fiction and I'm enjoying this second book better than the first.
glad to know it wasn't just me that had that opinion. there really is some quite interesting technology going on there, the nano-tech in particular sounded fascinating....just couldn't slog thru all the extraneous detail.

Interesting that you like detail, yet this had too much detail. I often find too much detail makes it a chore for me to read. I don't like putting too much detail in my writing, but I at least want to be able to let readers know how everything looks. I remember reading Lord of the Rings and noticing how much detail he used. I know people who felt it was information overload and couldn't bear it.

I know! I feel like such a hypocrite! : ( I guess it just ended up feeling too much like coursework & not drawing me into the world of the book far enough or strongly enough for the massive amounts of information supplied to jar me out of it. Which it unfortunately did.
Found this on the SF experience list. I have to agree with you about this book. Normally I enjoy a good info dump, but the timing in this one was just too distracting. Bullets flying everywhere, life and death on the line, the enemy closing in, and Hey! How about we go over the history of this here medical procedure. Oh well. Some of it was fun.
