Uther had only stopped gambling when he began courting Ygraine; she knew that. Though Uther had denied his former habits, Ygraine's smiling eyes convinced him that he was doomed: she knew the truth. Even now, Uther knew Ygraine sensed his thoughts, but she no longer smiled. Uther did not want to take the gamble presented him - not this time.
