Rereading Stories

Apr 25, 2006 20:22

cordelia_v said in one of those memes about odd habits that she rereads a story she likes over and over and over again. She said that she gorges on the story. And she seemed to feel this was odd. Except, I'm the same way. I can read a new story I love 5 or 10 times in a week. It doesn't happen often that a story is so compelling. But damn, I love it ( Read more... )

"Snape: The Home Fries Nazi" is wonderful. I've read it twice already. :D

I often reread stories I like. I must've read Cartographer's Craft (sam_storyteller; Harry/Sirius) 5 or 6 times. And the story's incredibly long...

Some of the Snarries that I keep rereading:
The Fourth Year (caligryphy),
Dumbledore's Folly (dementordelta,
Quid Pro Quo (auctasinistra), ...

Almost all of my favourites are long though, so I can't reread them that often. :)

It's amazing, though, that the stories I really like never get boring. Even the funny ones. Even though I've read them over 10 times, they can still make me laugh. :D

I know. I have a lot more favorites than I listed. I have a ton of favorites I reread, but not gorge on.

You list reads like mine. I've read Cartographer's Craft. I thought it was really well done. But it didn't blow me away like some of the others did.

Oh, yes. I reread a lot. I have short list of 'grilled cheese' fics -- comfort fic, and possibly a bit gooey. ;-)

I love Predatrix's "Bastard and Idiot" too. The SS/HP sections of Minx's Lost Feeling series are also long-time favorites. And Tiranog's"Growing Pains". Not so much "A Nick in Time", for some reason. It gets about one reread for every three of the sequel. I've also been known to reread a Snape/Hagrid or two, but many find that an acquired taste.

Oh, I love Minx's series, too. I've reread that many times, too. But I put space between the rereadings. I like Nick and Growing Pains a lot, and I've read it a couple of times, too.

I think I'm an oddity in that it is almost impossible for me to reread stories. I've reread bits of A Wizard Song but not much more than that. I can't even reread stories that have been edited since my last reading. Perhaps I can if I really force myself but it's not much fun.

I have no clue what this means.

Wow. I don't know that I've met very many people who don't reread at all. I reread real books to tatters before I found fan fiction. I wonder if it's searching for a particular feeling and finding it in the story?

I'm not a rereader, heck, I'm not even a slasher, but all this extravagant praise spurred me to read The Home Fries Nazi and I was not disappointed.

The Home Fries Nazi was such a great story. I didn't realize you weren't a slasher.

You're the second person who has said they don't reread. Do you mean fan fiction or books in general? I reread everything.

I generally do not reread except to revisit certain really seminal books at intervals of 5-10 years to see how their impact changes with the context of my life. I think there are a few contributing factors.

One is that I am not a very fast reader, especially of fiction. I like to savor the language and hear each word in my head. I took three days to read HBP after it came out -- I just did not want to gobble it down without tasting anything. Another factor is my sense that there is just not enough time in the world to read all the things I want to learn about, even if I did not have any pesky adult responsibilities. Lastly, I read a lot for work, which can sometimes sour me temporarily on reading as an entertainment. Moreover, in middle age, I am having increasing difficulty getting a good optical correction, and my eyes fatigue more readily than they once did.

It all adds up to "first read = best read" for most things. I don't rewatch many movies, either.

PS - I am not anti-slash; it just doesn't really push my buttons. But all the cool kids seem to be on the slash side of the fandom, so I hang out over here and hope they won't make fun of me.
