Some Thoughts On Posting In Parts

Apr 14, 2006 11:54

Last week, I finished posting a story in 15 parts. The story wasn't a dreaded WIP in that it was complete when I started posting it. It only needed a final grammar edit ( Read more... )

I'm a whole thing in one-go person. I rarely read WIPs, even if I know they're completed or trust the author to complete them.
so while you were posting your story, I waited until you were done posting the whole thing to read it.

You know, I was expecting that from most people. I sometimes read the WIP and most times not. I was kind of surprised by the people who were enthusastic about the WIP.

I am like you: as a reader, I like the whole story in one part (with a few exceptions). As a writer, I love to post the story in chapters (not really as a WiP, but after I finished writing and my betas are still working on it).

I'm surprised at how well the whole posting a story in parts ended up going. I didn't think I'd like it or that my readers would either. Some don't, of course, but many do.

but it is kinda exciting,

That's interesting to me. I've read very few WIPs where the author posted it like I did. I think I'd be more inclined to read them that way. Like you said, it does drive me nuts when an author doens't finish her story.

Almost worst than that is waiting and waiting and waiting for the next part. I can get bored and lose interest.

But there are very few fanfics (only one, actually) that have me so hooked that I'll wait months for the next chapter.

I agree here. I can wait a few days, easily. Sometimes, I don't have time to read things right away anyway. But after a week, I'm thinking about other things. And after a month, I've forgotten half of what I read.

Heh. I get bored, too. And I don't start unless they have been rec'd to me. I don't trust most author's to finish them. *g*

personally i love to read fics in one long go, but recently events have made is so that any long fic i read has to be in parts so thats what i do. your fics in particular i love to read so i was excited that you were writing something at all and was willing to read in parts.

i believe it really depends on who the writer is an if the fic is finished or still being written. what i hate most about multi-parters is the huge possibility that it'll never be finished.

but like i said i prefer to read fics in one long go.

So, I'm seeing this a timing issue as well.

I am frustrated by the author who never finishes her WIP, but I don't mind reading in part, though like you, I prefer to have it all in one file.

I won't read any story until all parts are posted. I won't read any WsIP at all, period. If an author that I like starts posting a story in pieces, and indicates at the beginning that it's finished, I'll wait until the final piece is up before I jump in.

I read very fast and I read in A LOT of different fandoms. Trying to come back to a story and get back into the plot/feeling is torture for me. I end up having to go back and read the previous sections again to get back into it, and I hate doing that. So - waiting is what works for me.

I tried to reply to this a second ago and I shoved off the free wireless I can sometimes access from my office. I hope you're not going to get this twice.

I heard people say that they have to go back and reread the whole thing when it's posted in parts. Is that true even if it's only been a few days? I know for myself, when it gets to be too long I just lose interest.

For me it's true. Because even if a chapter is posted a day, I may have read a dozen different fics in between, in seven different fandoms. So while I may not have to go back and read every chapter, I will have to go back and read at least the last chapter to really be able to pick up the story again ( ... )

You do tend to get more feedback overall, and it draws out the sense of anticipation a little.

I didn't really think of it in those terms. I mean if a person comments on all 15 parts, what does that mean? I think like Gimli said, it still only counts as 1. *g*

But I guess the discussion that came up could be considered part of the feedback. And I really enjoyed that.

I think you're right about there not being a right or wrong way, but I'll probalby have to think about it some more. The next long story won't be done for a few months anyway, so I've got some time.
