I managed to max our my 80 GB harddrive (still not quite sure how). Externals were not working for my needs, so I took a look at replacing the whole system. $1,000 on sale for the low end MacBook Pro (which would have everything I need) was more than I wanted to spend

Yeah, with the way computing has evolved the past few years, buying a new one is mostly a factor of the old one being broken. I considered buying a new iMac for work, but realised it'd be smarter to buy an SSD and a new separate display for the Macbook, and maybe another display for home.
