I live in a third floor walkup. You're young and spry, so maybe it won't be as big a deal for you, but think about carrying not just your furniture up when you move in, but every damned thing you ever want. Also, consider the laundry situation there. Four floors up and down for every piece of clothing you want to wash. I am lucky enough to have a washer in my apartment, and I would NEVER have bought this place if that wasn't the case.

This is what I am thinking, yes. Second floor I could deal with, but this is way the hell up on the third floor of a gigantic Victorian house. I'm really not sure I want to deal with that.

I have to see more places, of course. Can't just settle on the first look, unless it's unspeakably awesome, which this was not.

I feel your pain! Seriously. After the (latest) plumbing disaster in our (expensive) building, I've been contemplating moving, but gad, what a pain in the ass. Everything you're talking about is so true!

It sounds to me kinda like the first place might be better. I know the third floor walk-up part sucks, but if you buy your furniture from a place that delivers, the big, burly delivery guys will bring it to you up there, so not your problem until you decide to move out - then you rent a couple of big, burly guys to help you. Last time my folks moved they rented guys from U-Haul, and they were very good.

If you do most of your living in the central space, maybe the wee bedroom isn't such a problem? Maybe? Does it have a decent kitchen?

ETA: Just read Vsee's comment - she does have a very good point there about the day by day trudging up and down stairs. Ow. My knees....

ETAA: Jeez... (never mind, I'm a moron who can't type)

Yeah, the big living area is nice. And there a wee office, too, which was cute. The bathroom was funny -- a big space, but only a tiny shower, toilet and pedestal sink. Needed cabinetry. The kitchen area was nice! Open to the living area, new counters... not bad.

I could rent burly guys, yes. Of course, that's one more expense.

I can take the stairs myself, but with several bags of groceries? Multiple trips? Anything at all bulky? /m\ Especially in winter. Nargh.

It's a start. I mean, it's not dreadful, but I think (hope) I can find something better...

Oh, man. I hate apartment hunting. hatehatehate. All that phone-calling and appointment-making. Blarg.

That first one sounds pretty good, though! It's not cheap, but all the utilities (including wireless!) are included? Cooool. Personally, I would jump on that just because I'm too lazy to go through the trouble of arranging my own internet connection. Stairs, though. Yeah. But just think how awesomely fit you'll be after trudging up and down those stairs for a year! Right...? Okay, sorry.

I am now going to go feed allllll of my quarters into the stupid washing machine. Hmmph.

I've never really had to do it before! I lived in residence for my entire university career (the last two years in a four bedroom townhouse with my homegirls. Best. Ever. Expensive as hell, but on campus, new house, and also: homegirls!) I only moved out of res last summer into the place I'm in, which is the house of a couple of my mom's old work friends. It just kind of fell into it sideways, yanno? So this finding my own housing thing is an adventure in adulthood!

They're really a lot of stairs, dug. I think you're underestimating the sheer vertical height of a Victorian mansion. D: It wouldn't be the Worst Ever, but I'm not going to go for it without having checked at least a couple other places. That's just silly, Ray. I think that place will be on the market for a bit yet, and the next place I'm setting up to see sounds better on paper.

Aw, it looks like you're doing pretty good at the apartment thing so far, then! The first place I found for myself was... less than ideal.

Yeah, you may be right about stairs. And I was just thinking about winter: I lived in a place with a lot of outside steps once, and I almost tumbled to my death a few times during blizzard season. Nobody wants that.

If you've got time, definitely keep looking around. There are few things in this world more sucktastic than realizing after a week that you hate the place you just signed a year lease on.

The only place I really didn't like was my first year dorm. It was a double room, fairly large, but old style -- no wall between (the building is 110 years old). It had nothing do do with the place itself, though, and everything to do with a) first-year stress and b) awful roommate. I'm not neatfreak, but that girl was a slob and I can't live in filth. /o\

The stairs really are a pain, I think. All I could think as we went up was-- "Wow, this'll be great on my mom's knees, and stepdad's back and my stepmom's sciatica." Not that they have to live there, but they'll be moving me, yanno?

If this next place looks as good as it sounds, I might just leap on it. Perhaps my patience will pay off.

awww, it DOES suck. not one of the better things about being all growed up, i COMPLETELY AGREE.

i wouldn't fear the stairs if i were you (i'm with brigantine: just have your furniture delivered!), but if you think you can find something better, then i'd wait. sometimes it just takes longer than you want it to!

*hugs you*

Zeeeeeeee!! D: Why can't I just be 14 again? OPld enough do do stuff on your own, too young to need a job... it was mint.

I'm a creature of great laziness, Z. I'll avoid that many stairs if I can. This place I just got contacted about sounds much better -- "lower" situation, fireplace, some furniture . . . could be a win.

*smish*

YAY! Surprise!Z! *clings* *inflates airmattress, lays in stock of butter tarts*

Fireplaces are made of awesome. If you can get a groovy fireplace and no awkward stairs, this can only be to the good!

Yeah, if ol' whatsherface ever gets back to me. :P I'm set to see another place on Wednesday that's a bit cheaper and apparently newly renovated. It's closer to downtown, but maybe it's a cool place.

And you did it again, you silly. I'm going to have to start screening you everywhere. :P
