Oh, ready-to-eat baby carrots, why do you forsake me? What is it about my fridge that causes you to welcome pseudomonads or fungi or whatever the heck that gross whitish biofilm slime in your unopened bag is? All I want is to give you a good home with my dill and cucumber dip, and you go consorting with microorganisms ( Read more... )

do not want, argh, nature hates me, food, boourns, no value, woe, epistolary, the thing about me is i'm kind of a dork

Woe, that is. A few months ago I bought a bag and when I got them home and opened them they felt all slimy. Ew. The expiration date wasn't for 2 more weeks. Very disappointing it was. I know not what causes such destruction to take place before it's time.

I share in your sadness.

P.S. Cucumber and dill dip? Now that sounds yummy! Fie on you, little carrots.

Slimy I can wash, but this was definitely Growth of something. Pseudomonads or fungus. S'what happens inna fridge. Woe is me.

(It is yummy dip! My cucumber was not all gross. I recommend Renee's anything for all your raw vegetable dressing needs. *nodnod*)

Alas, they were soft & slimy...so not a washable situation. :(

Yay cucumber! I love cucumber. Have you ever been to Betty's on King St. E.? I think it's near Sherbourne (been a while). They have an amazing grilled chicken on a delightful bread of some sort which I cannot recall, and the most delicious cucumber spread stuff to accompany it! It's been too long...must go have.

Renee's is definitely good - I must check for that one next time!

I have the same problem, to the point that I just buy full size loose carrots now. Maybe it's something to do with the fact that every bag of baby carrots I've seen is swimming in a lots of water? *boggles* So lame.

Let me clarify that when I say 'I have the same problem' I do not mean that I get a gross whitish biofilm slime on me. *nods* Because that would definitely be gross.

Also? Your post title has me giggling like mad. SRSLY produce? You want us to eat more veggies? THEN STOP ROTTING AND BEING GROSS ALREADY.

But then you have to peel them and stuff and lazy Meres is lazy, especially in pursuit of veggies.

Biofilms are bad for you. Try not to have them.

And right?! If vegetables weren't so damn vegetably we'd get along better. As it is, chocolate keeps FOREVER.

Pffft I just wash the carrot and eat it. No peeling or chopping or slicing or pretty-fying. Just wash :)

*munches absentmindedly on Toblerone* mmmMMmmmMMmmmm.

Films are good but biofilms are bad. *mental note*

Meres, this is a universal dilemma. I open the bag and kind of prop it in the fridge so I can breathe and it seems to help. Those special veggie bags with the holes might work too.

Maybe I will try putting new carrots in a dry ziploc some time, y/y? I do that with my cheese and it seems to help, so...

Yes, dry ziploc and leave it open a little bit. Happy carrots!
