So i got an email yesterday from someone who calls me her friend. She started talking about life and school, as people usually do in missives to friends. Then there it was...

...This campus is severely skewed to foreigners because they pay more than 2x the tuition the rest of us do and I'm really ready to leave because of the massive favoritism

once, during the heat of the BALIKATAN scandal in mindanao, there was a public symposium cum debate cum riot inside UP's Palma Hall, and i knew the girl on the megaphone. she was shouting so many stupid things about AMericans and how those American soldiers were just out to rape our women and pollute our minds with colonial crap. and i just went up to her and told her she was just being a propagandist. and that she was blinded by her newfound love for grandstanding (having been newly elected into the student council). i know that was a bit harsh, but it was the truth. and you know what she told me?

"bakit ako makikinig sa iyo, eh amerikana ka."

whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat!?!?!??! just because she knows me from high school and she knows where i was born and all that. putangina. a passport does not make me an american; i'm just as pinay as she is.
