*rotfl* I didn't really believe it at first but the LCROSS project (Lunar CRrater Observation and Sensing Satellite) is about
sending a rocket crashing into the moon causing a big impact and creating a crater, throwing tons of debris and potentially water ice and vapor above the lunar surface ( Read more... )

Apparently the impact will throw a plume of dust more than 9 miles in the above the surface of the moon. I'm pretty sure a dust plume that high should be visible with a smallish scope. Maybe a 7+ inch reflector. If the dust has traveled 9 miles above the moon, with the puny lunar gravity there might still be some residual dust for a couple hours afterward.

Hopefully the lunar reconnaissance orbiter will return some good pictures. :p

only NASA can come up with a program that is basically crashing.

But anything that keeps the NASA alive and kicking is a good thing.
