Part fifteen

In which everything ends.

Part Sixteen

Just before continuing to the very centre of the Ginnungagap, where Richter is, the gang runs into Aqua. She betrayed Ratatosk because she couldn't believe how cruel he was to Richter and Aster. I can't entirely blame her- Ratatosk is a bit of douche.

She refuses to let us see Richter and sends out a big-ass dragon to keep us busy. It's easily defeated.

Whoah, whoah, whoah. She loved Richter? But I thought Richter was... I mean... I don't think he'd have an interest in any female, regardless of whether she's a Centurion or not.

Decus gives the core to Alice for safekeeping and she- ........... Wait, a pact? Since when are pacts involved for Centurions? They're not Summon Spirits!

So a bit further on, the entire party gathers to prepare for............ ~the final battle~

On the other side of the door, the animation budget suddenly runs out and the quality of the cutscene gets cut in half. I don't entirely know what happened here. It was the same in the Wii version.

Whoah, who lit Richter on fire?

Oh, it was just the demons of Niflheim, lending him their power. They transform him into something eerily similar to Nebilim from the first game, but Alice and Decus easily defeat him anyway.

Then Decus decides to close the door again with his Ratatosk powers.

But the demons are fighting back!

So apparently Richter had a Sacred Stone with him all along. With it, you could burn your internal mana.

... Hold on, but if mana is like a poison to demons, and Aselia is basically filled with mana thanks to the new World Tree... Wouldn't the demons drop dead the moment they left the Ginnungagap?

Dun dun duuuun! So Richter was a relatively good guy after all.

Decus just begins laughing.

And attempts to choke Alice.

Richter to the rescue!~

And Yuan is standing by to catch Alice.

As it turns out, it's not Decus, it's actually Ratatosk. ... Err. Well. His old Ratatosk personality, I mean, because it's made pretty damn clear by now that Decus is Ratatosk.

But the real Decus is still in there somewhere and he attempts to stop... himself. Ratatosk.

Only to fail.

Luckily, Alice has no qualms with kicking Decus's butt. Yuan decides to give her a hand, because he did warn Decus about not betraying his trust.

... I don't entirely know where Presea and Raine came from. They were just suddenly standing behind Alice after the fight.

But anyway, Ratatosk lost and is ready to accept his punishment. Alice sees right through that like cellophane. He isn't Ratatosk, he's Decus after all. ... His personality. I mean.

She decides to trust in Ratatosk and gives Decus Aqua's core.

Because forcefully sealing Ratatosk's personality away with the use of Verius' power was apparently a bad idea. ... I dunno, I thought it was pretty clever, considering Ratatosk wanted to destroy all humans, elves and those in-between.

... Hold on, where did you hear that line, Alice?

Richter looks shocked that his trademark line (which he stole from Aster) is being stolen by Alice.

"Up yours, Richter. It's my quote now!"

The rest of the gang decides to believe in Ratatosk as well, leading to a surprised Decus. Is he the only one who has common sense? Again, Ratatosk wants to destroy people. He is a vicious killer. Why would you trust him? The fact that his conscience took on a personality of its own, which Ratatosk is constantly rejecting, should be enough of a tip-off that he can't be trusted.

But whatever, guys. If you all wanna die? Then let's have another talk with Ratatosk and see if we can merge those two personalities after all.

Yeahhh... That's what I thought too, Ratatosk. But after fighting him inside Decus's headspace, Ratatosk admits that weakling other half of his is pretty strong anyway. And so he decides to believe in him. ... Himself. Believe in himself.

In turn, Decus will believe in Ratatosk.

Awaken, my final Centurion!

And then the animation budget ran out again. Suffice it to say, Decustosk- Ratacus? ... The combination of the two, who is ultimately still Ratatosk, isn't such a bad guy. He decides to fix a huge plothole to make sure the universe from Tales of Phantasia makes sense, by removing mana from all living beings (except Summon Spirits) so they're no longer dependent on it. Then he'll use that mana to create a new lock on the door to Niflheim. However, that'll take a lot of time, so until the mana-removal-ritual is finished, Richter will need to stand guard by the door by burning his own mana anyway. SUCKS TO BE YOU, RICHTER! =P

The rest of the party says their farewells and leaves. Alice will forever mourn the loss of her first boyfriend. ... Until she finds another one, anyway. She's, what, eighteen? Plenty of time to move on, I'd say. Especially because she's a half-elf.

So now Richter is left with Ratatosk. Neither of them will be able to leave the room for 1000 years.

1000 years in a room with stinky Dumbo-Decus? Aw for the love of-

FIN!

Coming up later, random gameplay shots, alternate Flanoir scenes and goofy faces!
