I'm thrilled to see some more of this verse - it really is addictive reading!

I think you tackled this so well, from Sam's POV, to his fear and confusion and finally the realisation that he's holding his family back, that he's a burden. While this is soul destroying, I can understand him wanting to leave, that it's the best thing for his family. It's very Sam.
