MeLuna XL and Fleurcup capacity

May 12, 2015 10:46

The closest cup I have to a goldilocks is the large Fleur, which is easy to insert, remove, clean, and creates an excellent, leak-free seal. It still runs a bit short on capacity (I'm a champion bleeder). I dream of a cup I can wear to sleep soundly through the night without getting up to empty it. I can fill the Fleur about 3/4 of the way full ( Read more... )

The capacity chart at http://sizecharts.livejournal.com/ says the XL Meluna has a higher capacity than the LUB despite the smaller dimensions.

About the capacity.

The sizechart seems to say that while the full capacity of MeLuna XL is 42, the to-the-holes capacity is 30. Stacked up against a Fleurcup large capacity of 35 whole cup and 29 to the holes.

I'm wondering if the 42 means there's just more space on top ABOVE the wholes where the cervix can sit? So this might all mean extra cervix-free volume that will get me through the night?

It's also not a lot of money to buy a Meluna, so many just worth shelling out to try. :P

The overall capacity is a little higher so hopefully those extra few ml will make a difference. It's not an exact science -- more of a "cross your fingers and hope for the best."

I have both cups and the Fleurcup I'd say is a more springy type cup because it's silicone. The Meluna I've had to maneuver to open and I've had both the sport and classic stiffness. I don't have problems on maneuvering to open the Melunas at all. My go to fold is the labia fold for all my cups. I'd say the closest Meluna that feels like the Fleurcup is the classic but it's not as springy as a Fleurcup. I'm not sure if the dimensions of the XL Meluna and LUB but I'd definitely suggest on looking at the size charts to see which has the most capacity.

MeLuna XL is my favourite overnight cup. I bleed very heavily on my first night (and day) and this cup miraculously gets me through the night without any leaks ( ... )

Thanks for the insight and sharing your experiences!

Fleurcup works great for nights when I get 4-5 hours of sleep. But it get it so full during heavy nights that it either starts leaking, or I have the dreaded "morning gush" when I stand up.

I don't have a comfort issue with stiffer cups like the Diva, old Yuuki or Ladycup (which has a wide and stiff rim), so I can probably manage the classic or sport just fine. I never had a problem opening the softer Sckoon cup (I only have a small- having trouble getting ahold of a Large to try!).

Wow, I have tried so many cups.... >_

Hahaha.... doesn't sound familiar at all. _> I think I'm at cup #11 atm. Some I have both in clear and in colour ^^"

Old Ladycup and old Yuuki were just soft enough for me. It's the new stiff Yuuki, classic XL MeLuna and large Lunette that gave me cramps immediately after insertion occasionally. It might be the pressure against the cervix that triggers it. Loads of people have no issues with stiffer cups and even prefer them to soft ones, so I'm pretty sure you'll be fine if you had no problems with them thus far.

Come to think of it, I became less crampy after switching from Yuuki to the Fleur as my primary cup and small Sckoon as my secondary. Fleur and Sckoon are both softer. Never occurred to be that the cup stiffness might be an aggravating factor... so I guess I'll steer clear of the sport stiffness then!

This isn't so much related to cup selection, but a Vitamin E supplement may help slow the bleeding. I started taking it (the natural kind, d-alpha, not the fake dl-alpha) for other reasons and have noticed that my periods are a bit lighter. I think I got this tip from someone on this community, though that wasn't the reason I started taking it. A nice side effect though!

That's a good tip.

I few months ago, I started drinking a daily tonic of organic apple cider vinegar everyday, just a few tablespoons in water.

Helped so much with the PMS symptoms. My skin got better, the pre-menstrual-week swelling and bloating was significantly decreased, and I do think my periods got lighter. I haven't measured exactly, but it's not crazy for me to have 120-150 ml fluid loss over three days (my last two days are just spotting). I think when I consistently drink the ACV, the volume of loss is at least under 100 ml, which feels much more manageable.

I was traveling abroad for the week before my last period and wasn't drinking ACV, so my last period was worse than it had been for several months.

I'll give it a shot with the vitamins, tho! Cup capacity or no, I'm tired of getting the anemic fatigue.

I used the Meluna XL when I had a Paragard monsoon every month - it definitely had more capacity than 30 mL - maybe something to do with the smaller and fewer air holes than most cups. Only cup that got me through the night. Still had the morning gush upon removal, but no leaks when I was asleep.

That's encouraging! I went ahead an ordered the Meluna XL classic firmness, so hopefully it will live up to my hopes for better capacity. I'm nervous it will be leaky like the large Yuuki. I don't know if the Yuuki leaked so much because it's a pointy cup and my cervix was taking up so much space at top, or because the holes were too small, and the seal kept breaking. The Diva (sm) was also super leaky for me and had small holes. But the shape of the Meluna is PERFECT for preserving capacity in the face of space-taking cervix's, and I suppose I can always widen/add holes.
