Pet Peeves: Please Spell Your Character's Name Correctly

Dec 22, 2010 21:06

One of mine is fan fiction that includes the misspelling of a character's name. This really bugs me.

So, in the interest of ... pet peeves .... I took a few minutes to make a list of the correct way to spell Btvs/Ats characters' names. (Yes, I know there are sources I could link instead but I was motivated.)

LOL! I have seen those characters' names misspelled in exactly that way.

It was only at a convention reading the con book that I realised the Mayor's full name is Richard Wilkins III; and very possibly Joss nodding to his love for Shakespeare. Armin Shimmerman was one of the guests which highlighted it for me, as he has played/wants very much to play Richard III.

This piece of trivia brought to you by the letter C.

Oh and my favourite mispelling is referring to Wesley as a rouge demon hunter. Does he have a colour chart? "I can't kill that, it's a crimson demon."

Thank you! I edited to add that.

And yeah, I've seen the rouge demon hunter, too.

I try really hard to spell the characters name correctly. But this is list is going to make things a lot easier especially with the names I didn't know. For example of all the times that I've seen BtVS I never knew Faith's last name. I always thought they never mentioned it..could it be I just wasn't paying attention?

I'm definitely adding this to my mems :)

Actually, they didn't mention it in the series. Post-Chosen, Joss was asked what Faith's last name was for some officially-licensed RP game. And he picked Lehane because it's a Boston-ish name. Or something. Anyhow, the surname was *kinda* made canon in the comics.

Which is a long-winded way of saying I think you can take it or leave it.

This has bothered me for years. Sometimes, I'll leave a comment correcting an author's spelling (but only if I'm reasonably sure I won't get my head bit off for doing so.)

Two errors:

Arashmaharr has two Rs at the end.

Krevlornswath does not have the E in the middle.

Otherwise this looks good. I'm curious, actually, do you know if there's an in-text source for Levinson, Blaisdell, and MacLeish? I've never been clear on where those surnames came from -- are they from the Sunnydale High Yearbook tie-in?

Jonathon's last name on some of the magic'd stuff in Superstar. EXAMPLE screencap.

I prefer to Ahn instead of An for Anya, if her already short name must be shortened. Is An how the script dictates it?

re: Jonathan Levinson. This! I have also used a screencap from "Five by Five" to show people how Lindsey McDonald is spelled.

re: An. Hmm. It would make more sense having it spelled Ahn. I will look that up later and if I can find it spelled Ahn in the shooting script, I'll change it. Thank you for the suggestion!

Oh, thank you! I rarely rewatch "Superstar", so that didn't occur to me.
