A Very Marvel Thanksgiving

Nov 25, 2009 18:20

Growing up, Thanksgiving in the McNeil household had always been a grand affair. With ten mouths to feed - more, in fact, on the few occasions the Twoyoungmens had joined them, not to mention whatever extended family had made their way out west on any given year - Heather had assisted in the preparation of the traditional dinner since she’d been ( Read more... )

No matter the place of his birth, Cable didn't think of himself as an American. And frankly the idea of thanksgiving was one he found darkly amusing given that the peace being celebrated was one of the most short lived in all history.

But he appreciated the sentiment and there were people at this gathering, Jean primary among them, that he cared a good deal about. So he was there nonetheless. He always enjoyed good food, in any case, and he didn't look like being disappointed on that score.

Much as I've come to respect and genuinely -- surprisingly, but genuinely -- like the guy, I'd still be lying if I said seeing Cable in any sort of normal environment isn't the least bit strange.

"Enjoying yourself?" I ask, looking up at him.

"I am," he replied with a little smile. "Though I'm as surprised as you are that I'm still capable of it."

It amused him that people seemed to think that he could never be comfortable without a gun in his hand, not the least because he knew that there had been a time when that was genuinely true.

"Family dinners don't really seem your style, no," I agree with a smirk. "Fighting aliens, yeah, but eating turkey? Not so much."

It might not have been the classiest of all side dishes and it had been a bit strange to make a food she had never eaten, but that seemed arbitrary. Sweet potatoes and marshmallows are one of those traditional Thanksgiving treats that is so American it practically causes cavities from one look.

Holding a plate in front of her, Alice tries to figure out where to start. It's all so new and exciting, she feels a bit stuck without a sense of direction.

"First alien fighting and now thanksgiving," Cable announced as he approached with a plate of his own. "You've practically been adopted, it seems."

"I know! It's a total blast." Alice giggles and bobs her head as she puts a spoonful of potatoes into her mouth. Taking a moment to really enjoy them, she coughs slightly after she swallows in a hurry. "Family and friends are the best part of everything."

"Yes," Cable replied evenly as he started loading his plate. "They are."

It had been a long time since Jean's made a Thanksgiving dinner. Or at least it felt that way. Time is definitely blurry around the edges here, that's for certain. She might not be an expert in the cooking for the masses sort of thing, but it had been fun. A redhead prepped feast for their makeshift little family.

She just hopes that everything stays warm long enough to be consumed properly. There really isn't such thing as a microwave on this place to help them in a pinch. Sitting on a chair, she resists the urge to go over and check what's made. No, not now. She'll wait a bit.

"I would've thought you'd work up an appetite by now," says Heather with a small smile, leaning over the back of the nearest chair. She herself hasn't had a chance to sit down since she woke up this morning, but there'll be plenty of time for that later, once everyone else is fed and watered, so to speak.

"You would think so, wouldn't you?" Jean answers with a slight shake of her head. She should eat that is at least certain, but she's got the kind of nervous energy that is making it difficult for her to drink water, let alone stuff herself.

"Maybe in a little while. I just feel too jittery from the spirit."

"Understandable," replies Heather, and she nods the once. The holiday certainly holds no personal significance for her, but there's something about so many people brought together by the promise of a good meal that gets to her, regardless. "Honestly, I can hardly stand the thought of sitting down long enough to eat just yet -- though I'm sure it's all delicious!"

There's never been a point in my life where I thought I might sit down to Thanksgiving dinner with not just my friends, but some of the X-Men, Alpha Flight and an ex-vampire as well. After a while, with the life I got thrown into, you have to become flexible, but this is just weird.

It's not a bad weird, though, especially since I do have friends here and anything we could have done on our own wouldn't so much as hold a candle to what Heather and the others have provided. So strange as the company is, I find I'm actually looking forward to this gathering as I sit down at the table, glancing to my left. "Can you pass the potatoes?"

Karolina puts down the bowl of vegetables in her hand and picks up the potatoes from her left, passing them to Nico. "Gravy too?" she asks and doesn't wait for her answer, just passes it right along.

"This is pretty bizarre right?" she says, keeping her voice low.

"Okay," I reply, lowering my voice in kind, "bizarre doesn't even begin to cover this." It seemed like a good idea, coming here, in part because I don't want to do this in a big crowd of strangers and because there's no way we can do it at home, just the three of us and our seven thousand pets, but really, it's weird. "We're breaking bread with the X-Men, we're gonna need a stronger word."

"How about freakish?" she prompts. "I keep waiting for someone to get into a fight." Whatever it is, it is pretty weird, but the food smells good. She just hopes no one takes any special interest in them. She knows all of the old rules are out the window and this is Thanksgiving, but they were never exactly the golden children back home.

The timing for something like this, as far as Mary Jane was concerned, couldn't have been worse if someone had planned it intentionally. That, though, had been all the more reason for her to throw herself into the planning of it. She needed the distraction more than ever, and while so busy, it would be easier to act like she was fine, like she hadn't spent the last ten days or so a total mess. With this crowd especially -- friends of both hers and Peter's -- things were bound to get uncomfortable before too long, but she wasn't going to let that get in the way now. As far as she was concerned, she hadn't done anything wrong.

She kept a little to the outskirts of the gathering crowd anyway, a smile on her face to hide how anxious she was becoming. Having been one of the people to help put this all together, she figured it would make sense if she waited until more people got settled before she joined them all, and make her feel considerably less awkward, too.

"Hello, Mary Jane," Cable greeted her cheerily as he arrived.

He wouldn't count himself as a friend of either her or Peter and neither knew nor cared about any difficulties they had but he had met Mary Jane before and liked her. And sometimes he was capable of being friendly without a hidden agenda.

"Hi," Mary Jane said warmly, her smile widening as soon as she realized anyone had approached. There was no reason for her to bring her personal problems into this, to suggest that she was anything less than pleased with the whole event. She just hoped Peter didn't come wandering up any time soon. "Cable, right? I'm really glad you could make it."

"I doubt Jean would have forgiven me if I missed it," he replied with a slight smile. "The three of you have clearly put a lot of effort into everything."
