It was always a special occasion when the flagship of the Federation came to Earth and this time was no exception. Admirals and department heads took it upon themselves to carve a slice of time out of their busy schedule to walk the decks of the Enterprise. Beverly had seized on the chance to have a larger-than-usual audience and had been preparing for the theatrical performance of A Christmas Carol for the past couple of weeks.

She patted Barclay on the shoulder. “You’re going to do fine, Reg,” she assured him.

His brows furrowed. “Are you sure? Because, um, I think that you, um, should have probably cast Commander Data for the role of Scrooge instead of me,” he sputtered.

She raised an eyebrow. “I hope you’re not questioning by abilities as a director.”

His eyes widened. “No! Not at all! What I meant to say was--”

The doors to the side of them opened. Jean-Luc and Kathryn walked in; the captain looked slightly agitated while the admiral wore something akin to a smug look on her face.

Beverly turned back to Reg. “I’ll see you at rehearsal tonight, alright?"

He nodded, not taking his eyes off the senior officers. “Sirs.” His eyes fluttered shut as he mentally berated himself. “I mean, sir and ma’am. What I meant was--”

“Reg, go,” Beverly ordered.

“Oh right!” he scuttled out of the room.

When the doors had closed behind him, Beverly flashed a smile at her two new visitors.

Kathryn returned the gesture; Jean-Luc, however, did not.

He held up the PADD. “I believe there has been a casting error.”

She had wondered how long it would take for him look at the role he had been given by her. She took the PADD from his hand and scanned the text. “No. Everything’s right.”

“You have me cast as Bob Cratchit,” he replied.

She smirked. “Would you have preferred playing the role of Scrooge?”

He seemed impervious to her sarcasm. “You said it would be a small part, Beverly. Not the second biggest role in the production.”

Kathryn grinned widely. “I wish I had known about this before I came aboard. I might have convinced Boothby to hop in a shuttle and leave the grounds for a few days so he could see Jean-Luc’s performance.”

“Actually...” Beverly reached around and snatched another PADD from behind her. “...Alyssa had to back out. So I was hoping you could take her place.”

Kathryn shot Jean-Luc an accusing glare. The captain held his hands up in innocence. “I tried to tell you. Beverly is known for her...tenacity when it comes to ship productions.”

Kathryn shook her head. “I don’t act, Beverly.”

“Anyone can act,” she countered.

The two women looked at each other for several seconds, neither one willing to concede defeat. Jean-Luc spoke up, “You know as well as I do that when Beverly has her mind set, there is no changing it.”

The admiral opened her mouth to argue, but all that tumbled out was a sigh. “What’s the role?”

“Mrs. Cratchit.” Beverly put her hands on Kathryn’s shoulders and turned her to face Jean-Luc. She placed the PADD with her lines in Kathryn's grip. “I want to see chemistry!”

“Bever--”

“Go.”

The two of them started reluctantly saying their lines, but as they started getting into their roles, their passion began revealing itself. By the time Kathryn had finished her lines, giving her opinion of odious Mr. Scrooge, Beverly felt a swell of pride at her casting.

She clapped her hands when they finished the scene. “Bravo! See? Everyone can act.”

“Maybe,” Kathryn acquiesced.

Jean-Luc looked less than convinced. “Perhaps now would be a good time to discuss the casting of Tiny Tim.”

Beverly smiled broadly. “I stand by my decision.”

“Who’s playing Tiny Tim?” Kathryn wondered.

An impish grin danced across her lips. “Worf, of course.”
