John gave his wide, black belt one finally tug before looking at himself in the mirror. Oh yeah, he looked like he just stepped out of a page of a catalogue.

.A Christmas catalogue, that is.

Just as he was smoothing out his grey beard, Teyla’s voice cut through on his intercom. “John, we have a slight problem. Rodney is now saying he is too busy to attend this afternoon’s activities.”

John had a feeling that Rodney would try to do something like that, especially after he saw his "uniform". He gave himself one final look in the mirror before leaving his quarters. “Where are you two?”

“In his lab.”

“I’m on my way.”

John got several amused smiles from various members of the expedition as he made his way down to Rodney’s lab. He stepped inside and saw Teyla holding out a pair of shows from Rodney to take.

“Where’s your Christmas spirit, McKay?” he asked as he crossed the room.

Rodney turned from Teyla and rolled his eyes after seeing Sheppard. “It looks like you have enough for everyone on Atlantis, Santa Claus.”

John grinned at his snarky comment. The Santa costume --fat suit and all-- was perfect. “Just getting in the yuletide mood.  And it's Santa John.” He took the elf shoes from Teyla and thrust them into Rodney’s chest. “Now, get changed.”

Rodney scrunched up his face. “I can’t, Sheppard. I have too much--”

“If I have to where this ridiculous outfit...” rumbled Ronon, walking into the room. His shoes tinkled merrily as he walked inside the lab. “Then so do you.”

“Besides, it’s for a good cause,” John reminded him. “We’re trying to give the Athosian kids some sort of celebration. This year hasn’t been the easiest for them. It can’t be fun for them to pick up and move planets. Again.”

Rodney didn’t look too moved by Sheppard’s words. Belatedly, John remembered he still didn’t care for children that much.

“And you know how much Elizabeth loves it when you show her your...” John forced out the words, “...sensitive side.”

Rodney narrowed his eyes, but took the shoes. “That was low, Sheppard. Even for you.”

John flashed a smug grin. “It worked, didn’t it?”

“Oh,” he called as Rodney turned to get ready to leave, “before we go, I've got some modifications for you to do to the jumper.” He held out the list.

Rodney snatched the paper from his hand. “You want me to string Christmas lights outside of the jumper?”

John just smiled.

*************

Christmas in New Athos was better than John had hoped for.

For a couple of hours, the children took turns walking up to him and his merry band of elves, including Carson and Elizabeth, to receive special gifts. Elizabeth had somehow convinced Caldwell to bring a load of toys and goodies so they could hand them out to the Athosian kids during the holiday season.

As a little girl slid off John’s lap, pulling her new wagon behind her, he leaned over to Elizabeth who was in full elf garb. “I think everyone is having a good time.”

“Except Rodney,” she mused.

One little boy, Kathan, kept going to Rodney and jingling his bell-adorned shoes, much to the scientist’s annoyance.

John shrugged off her comment. “He’s lovin’ it, aren’t you, McKay?”

Rodney glared.

“All of the children appreciate your kindness, Rodney,” Teyla said, approaching them. She smiled widely. “They have enjoyed all of gifts. Thank you.”

Elizabeth smiled. “Your people have shared many of your traditions with us. I thought it would be a good idea to do the same.”

Teyla nodded. “Everyone is enjoying themselves.”

A group of children walked up behind Teyla, each with a hopeful look in their eye. “Santa John, will you play with us?” the little girl in the front asked, holding up a soccer ball.

He didn’t know how well he’d be able to play, wearing the Santa suit, but he was willing to bet that he could still wipe the floor with McKay. “Sure thing. We’ll have two teams: Santa John versus McKay the Elf. Who wants to join his team?”

“I do!” Kathan shouted, flicking Rodney’s shoes again.

*****************

Hours later, the six adults looked at each other, exhausted. They had played and laughed with the children until, finally, they little ones seemed to run out of energy.

John looked at the tired band of elves. “Whose idea was it to let them eat all of the candy?”

Ronon gave him a sour look. “Yours, Sheppard.”

“Oh well...in that case, they sure are cute when they have more energy than a ZPM,” John replied as they dragged themselves to the jumper.

He looked at them: Elizabeth and Rodney were walking side by side, Teyla was next to him, Carson and Ronon were bringing up the rear. It was difficult for most everyone on Atlantis during the holiday season to be away from their families back on earth, but, over the years, the sting for John had lessened. These six people had become closer to him than his own brother and father. He would much rather spend Christmas with them than anyone else in the galaxy.

“What is it, John?” Teyla asked, knowing something was on his mind.

He shook his head, dismissing the sentimental thoughts. If Rodney ever knew what he was thinking, he would never live it down. Emotional declarations weren’t his strong suit, even after being separated from them for several months.

John grinned at her. “I was just thinking that Zelenka better not have started the Fruitcake Fling off the west pier while we were gone.”

“He wouldn’t! He knows I’ve been coming up with my catapult for weeks now!” Rodney said.

“Fruitcakes flings and Santa John...” Teyla shook her head. “Your people have some...interesting traditions.”

“Just wait,” John replied, lowering his voice. “Maybe one year I’ll share another tradition with you involving a little branch of mistletoe.”
