I'm trying to cut down on both, y'see. When I stopped the drink the first time I dropped a good few pounds within the first week - even before I started jogging regularly (ha ha. hee. ho ho. ha. aha. ha.).
But even giving up the booze is gonna be fairly useless if I'm still shovelling cake and cheese sarnies down my throat.
Call upon the spirit of Batman to help you through, Lex. Vices are always really, really hard to get rid of, so don't feel bad if you slip at first. But try long enough and you can cut the importance of that shit doooown.
i'm noting randomly (obviously, right?). good luck on the quitting drinking thing. i tried several times & phucked it all up before i finally managed (& been sober about 8 years now, yay that). So.. yea, hard fight, but if i can do it, anyone can. ^_^ So good luck!

I'm starting out just not drinking weekdays and having one glass at weekends. Seems easier to do it in stages.
Major win points for the sober 8 years. Hope it continues to work out for you. :)
