Pulsing Hum UpdateOk, so last night, after reaching my breaking point (you know, not sleeping for four days because of the sound), I went and turned off the pool pump around 1am. Got back to the room and...no difference. That wasn't the problem. I believe, however, I have found the problem. One much more irritating and problematic ( Read more... )

I'd talk to the neighbor. explain that when they run the fan during the day it's not noticable, but when they have it on at night it vibrates your floor and bed. Maybe they can turn it down a notch? If they odn't believe you, have them turn it on and come into your apartment. also, try putting a rug ont he floor over where the fan would be? I don't know if the extra insulation woyuld help or not...

The offer to purchase an alternate fan would help matters, I'm sure.

I totally know what you mean about vibrations (I used to be able to tell when my uncle truck was slightly out of tune because the vibration would make me nauseated and then give me a migraine.
And you are right earplugs wont help. A correctly ballance fan should cause a vibration so it's probably just that. I'd bring it to the neighbors attention and see if they see about getting it rebalanced (your apartment office should do that) but if they brush you off I'd go straight to the managment.

Talk to management, tell them you figured out what the noise is and would they check the downstairs ceiling fan to make sure it's not unbalanced or needs replacing. The older ones make a lot of noise, and they get unbalanced easily. Other than that, you might try offering to get them a standing fan if they have to have a fan at night (I do, so I know I wouldn't want to have no fan at all).
