A Night on the Town

Mar 24, 2006 16:41

Yoko had never really actively wanted people around before. But now? Now she was feeling a little bit lonely. She had come home from the bookstore (and a brief stop-over in the Nexus) to find an empty apartment and no one nearby. She had tried watching television to keep her mind off of it. She'd even taken a walk around the block. But she was ( Read more... )

An electric broom starts up in the apartment above Yoko's.

And Yoko nearly jumps out of her skin. Taking a moment to keep from having a heart attack, she then looks up at the ceiling. "Hello? Excuse me!"

No need to be rude, after all. Manners are important when you deal with people!

Claire doesn't hear Yoko until she accidentally yanks the plug out of the wall. Then she muses that they should probably put better insulation in the building's walls.

She comes downstairs and knocks on the door.

Yoko is at the door in a flash. She pokes her head into view and, seeing Claire, smiles broadly. "Hi, Claire! Was that you upstairs?" She opens the door and moves to one side. "Do you want to come in?"

"...R-Rebecca's not here right now, though. Is that all right?"

Kevin ducks into the apartment's main door, jog down the hall, and peeks his head in to Yoko's apartment door, which was open. He's holding something behind his back.

"Knock knock."

Yoko turns around to see who it is. And her face lights up when she sees it's Kevin. "Kevin! Hi!" She runs over to give him a quick hug. "How are you? I haven't seen you in a while!" Then she remembers that Claire's in the area, so she turns bright red again.

"Oh... uhm... Kevin, when did you decide to move in upstairs?"

Claire, standing behind Yoko, shrugs apologetically at Kevin.

He hugs her with one arm, the other still holding whatever it was behind him and gives her a quick kiss on the head.

"I've been alright. Really good, actually, a lot of--"

He pauses, kind of glances at Claire as she shrugs, and clears his throat.

"Yeah." He figures now is a good time to present Yoko with the small bouquet of white flowers he was hiding. "About that..."

"Why would that weird me out, Kevin? I happen to think the idea of you living upstairs from Rebecca and me is actually kind of nice." She turns her head to give him a broad, reassuring smile.

"And as for the job? I-I'd say that if you want it, then you should go for it. Like you said, it's one in a million." She folds her hands in her lap and watches the New York streets whizz by outside the window.

"If it makes you happy, that's all that matters. But still..." There's that smile again! Yoko's certainly in a good mood right now.

"...I like the idea of you living nearby. It makes me feel... I don't know, happy."

Kevin's a little surprised.

"...oh. Well... well, that's a lot better'n I was hopin' for."

He stops at a red light.

"I guess I just didn't want it to seem like I was tryin' to move things too fast, or anythin'. But... if it's okay, that's a huge weight off my mind."

He takes a thoughtful-looking puff of his cigarette, flicks it outside and rolls up the window.

"So--I'm guessin' you've seen this one before, huh? It's a good one?"

Yoko merely smiles at Kevin and pats him on the shoulder. "You were worrying? Oh... S-sorry." She smiles at him before looking out the window again. "You didn't need to worry..." And is that a blush on her face or is it just washover from the traffic light?

"It's a long musical. Very long." She giggles and shrugs her shoulders. "I suggest you don't drink anything before it starts. And that you plot a time to use the restroom." She folds her arms and grins at her reflection in the window. "Because everyone in the theater will be jostling for position."

"Oh..." Kevin thinks, for a brief moment, that his Great Date Plans may have backfired. For him, at least.

Truthfully, he was trying to impress her by doing something "classy"; little did Yoko realize that not only did Kevin er, not exactly enjoy musicals, but he was probably expecting this to be less than a two-hour affair.

Or did she?

"...well, I can handle it, I think." He adjusts the rearview mirror, and flashes Yoko a smirk.
"Broadenin' the ol' horizons and all that, right?"

It takes about 20 minutes, but they arrive downtown. He finds a space well enough--which is a godsend, considering the playhouse. He gets out and opens her door--not to be chivalrous, but because uh... it kind of won't open without an act of minor violence upon it.

In they go!
