Oh, fandom. Sweet fandom. I have some things to say to you! They all have something to do with Mai and her relationship with Zuko, so there's kind of a theme here.
It's what I'm here for? (CHIRA, WHY DO I NEVER LEARN.)
Oh, yes! OH, YES. SO HOT AND AWESOME. But fandom has informed me that when Iroh interrupts Zuko's anguish to discuss tea, it is a gentle means of distracting him from aforementioned anguish; when Mai interrupts Zuko's anguish to tease him, it is because she is a heartless golddigger and/or whore. Apparently. I want Mai and Uncle Iroh to get together and mock Zuko over tea.
The creators have actually gone out of their way on a number of occasions to say that they don't and won't cater to 'shipping contingents, that certain relationships are not and will not be canon, and so forth. They specifically said that the infamous cave scene in Crossroads of Destiny was not a romantic scene and as revealed in 03x03: The Awakening (which I don't know if you've seen already? So I'll try to be vague!), Katara's exchange with Zuko re: the spirit water was included as a plot point, not as foreshadowing of a romantic triangle or a concession to Zuko/Katara fans

(kajsld fucking Squeenix! "Oh, hey, guys, we're releasing x number of new titles in the Kingdom Hearts series!" "Oh, sweet--" "AND THEY'RE ALL ON DIFFERENT SYSTEMS." FUCKING SQUEENIX.)
I know you're vague talking to avoid "frothing" all over the place (NICE CONTINUITY, by the way, I give two thumbs up), but I have to suck it up and admit I'm not entirely certain what you're referring to when you say unnecessary romantic notions. I PROMISE I WILL NOT STAB YOU FOR ANY OPINIONS YOU EXPRESS, as that would make rooming with you at Katsucon awkward and potentially hatesexy.
(If it's regarding Aang and Katara, I will politely disagree! Acknowledging my huge and unavoidable bias right here and now -- I am Memlu and I have a huge and unavoidable bias -- I think a number of the running themes and subplots in the second season supported Aang's crisis and decision in the finale, as well as amped up the emotional value and the severity of his decision. If this is not what you are referring to, it ... is okay to stab me? On account of my

I wish I didn't have to rely on the comics (have yet to see them) for backstory (you covered this point in your other post), but other than that, I am enjoying the hilarity of this relationship quite fine. Dude, I love dry, biting humor. Probably why I liked Daria back in the day . . . .
P.S. People are, of course, entitled to their own opinions. But people are also DUMB. If they don't like the pairing that's one thing and they can go on hatin', but Mai is a robot? Whaaa . . . ? I'm starting to be reminded of Star Trek fandom. T___T
I am so annoyed that they've chosen to skip over explaining why they're together now. Um. Partly because the comic explaining it all is hilarious, delightful, and surprisingly touching and I would like to see it animated. It is so great.
PS: Oh, definitely! I do not fault anyone who dislikes the character or the pairing, but some of the reasons offered are ... kind of dumb? AS YOU SAID. (Should I ask about Star Trek fandom? Or is this a wound better left untouched? *g*)
P.S. I really think it's better if people just try to justify why they like A pairing instead of B pairing instead of spending time on why B pairing sucks. I dunno, is it just me? (Star Trek fandom is . . . so unbelievably wanky. Not that I was ever involved or anything, but I'm the kind of person who gets mesmerized by train wrecks.)
Heh... it's good then that you weren't over at the ASN forums last weekend. Anti-Maiko-ers were actually proposing the idea that Mai and Zuko's ?constant? making out was bad for their relationship. Apparently, it's considered proof that the Maiko ship won't last if Mai and Zuko kiss some more in S3.
I saw that, actually! As with many of this fandom's wilder theories, I find that particular argument hilarious. Teenagers! In a supportive, healthy relationship! Making out! So unrealistic and devoid of meaning!!
