Oh my god, you guys. I'm just... OK, let me offer you a piece of completely unsolicited advice, yeah? Never, ever, have house guests during an election season. That goes double for blood relations. Even if you agree with their politics, things are going to get heated. And when you don't agree... well. You'll be going in the kitchen for a glass of ( Read more... )

Things are just especially uncivilized right now, you're right. Just today, I was driving home and the car in front of me belonged to a fan of (admittedly, radical and very unpopular) Fred Phelps and his "god hates fags" church or whatever. I'm used to seeing nasty bumper stickers on cars like that, but this one in particular had a sticker that said "you cum like a girl" which was just... too much. It's one thing to feel hate. It's another for that level of hate to engage your gag reflex, do you know what I mean? People are just... vicious right now ( ... )

The fic that got me into due South. One of the most engrossing fics I've ever read; I remember being stunned to see that it was 200K. (Not that it feels lighter weight than that; just that I get so intensely drawn into the story that the hours fly by like minutes).

It's actually true that it feels shorter than other stories of the same length. I think it's because its action is somewhat unified - there are lots of threads to tie up, yes, but they're not set up in series, and the overall time of the story is fairly short. There are epics spanning more years, or more events, that feel a lot longer even though they may be the same length.

Anyway, I got completely engrossed too. I couldn't read it as fast as I'd have liked, which was causing me quite a bit of frustration, but my obsession with it didn't let up one bit, not until I was finished.

Great story. I can totally see why it would be a gateway fic.
