Some one of my LJ friends recently posted about bat penises. Summary: they are Large. In further bat penis news, fruit bats commonly engage in fellatio. No other adult animals other than humans have been observed doing so, apparently. And apparently your dog licking himself for the hell of it doesn't count.

If you have some spare time, I heartily recommend "Promiscuity: The Evolution Of Sperm Competition" by Tim Birkhead. It has some of the craziest things I've ever read about, including a long discussion of the difficulty faced by hermaphrodites, as they try very hard to impregnate other hermaphrodites without getting impregnated themselves. It surveys an enormous number of weird penis designs, and spends a lot of time talking about techniques females use to filter, eliminate, and in some cases choose which sperm makes it through, including an absolutely crazy account of a type of sea cucumber in which the egg nucleus is motile and after allowing several sperm into the egg cytoplasm, the nucleus moves to contact each one sequentially and then returns to one and fuses with it, presumably having decided it is the best one. (Includes graphs, pictures, and x-rays!)

By the way, the weirdest penis bit in the above-mentioned book is a slug, Limax redii, in which "the penis is 85cm long, seven times the length of its owner's body

I got to watch a pair of leopard slugs, Limax maximus, have sex on my porch a couple months ago. It was amazing. This is what it looks like, about twenty minutes of action compressed to two: Youtube video
