My sister once pointed out the difference between the very very simple direct plots and simple scripts of popular movies from the 30s to the 50s, and compared it to the plots and cast of characters of modern Hollywood "junk". Even a piece of crap movie like "Mission Impossible" or "Transformers" had a complex multilayered interwoven plot, compared to the "one main plot, and maybe one small romantic side bar" you got from the 1950s.
People who complain that people are getting dumber, are trying to sell you something.
