[ oh leg talk. his least favorite thing and if it wasn't rachel he's probably say something snappy and borderline rude and the subject would drop. but it's rachel, so he doesn't. ]
Most of the time, yeah. I was trying to put off surgery but it looks like I'll have to get it anyway.
[ he shrugs, flicks a packet of sugar at her with a slight grin. ]
I can afford it. [She says it softly, her eyes downcast onto the table. When she speaks again, she just hopes he'll understand why his future, of all things, matters to her.] I... honestly wouldn't know what to do with myself if I lost my voice.
[It's nice, having her hand in his. Seems familiar, something she'd missed. Her parents don't act the same anymore; everything has become far too serious in her life. She even actually misses High School sometimes.]
Want to come stay with me? I mean, my dads spend more time at the hospital than they do at home. Even just a night would be... [Oh, she knows what she's saying. She just can't finish the sentence.]
You asking me to come over, braid your hair, paint your toenails? Play my guitar while you practice whatever new song you've got in the works?
[ he's smiling, relaxed and easy. it'd been a while since they'd done anything like that, not since glee club, when she'd managed to wrap him around her little finger. ]
I'm actually writing a musical right now. [She says it a bit sheepishly, as if even she thinks these shoes are too big for her to be filling.] But I'd like to think I've grown up a bit since the days of innocent sleepovers.
[ he shakes his head, grin widening. it was so her. besides, it had really only been a matter of time till she started writing her own stuff. what she'd come up with in high school had been amazing. ]
You know I'm in, Berry. I'll bring my guitar and everything.

[ his voice gets tight, and he brushes the shreds of paper off his place setting before picking up the menu. ]

Hey. I'll figure it out. You don't have to worry about it. There's always the pool cleaning business. I bet it's still booming.
[ it's supposed to be a joke. she's not supposed to...be upset. he doesn't want her to be upset because of him. ]
