This sort of place is more than a little foreign to Dorothy. She'd grown up on a farm in the middle of Kansas. Sunshine always seemed overbearing, sand was unknown, and pools were completely confusing. But, still, she'd won a trip, and she wasn't about to say no.

Her usual gingham dress had been set aside for this adventure, and she's wearing something a little more suitable for the humid weather, a powder blue sundress without shoes. A sunshiny smile is on her face as she walks pas the pool, and she wonders if that's something she should try out.

But while she's walking, she misses the person in front of her, stumbling into his shoulder. Dorothy gasps, stepping back with her hands up. "Oh, goodness. I'm so very sorry. Are you all right?"

Dorothy is so incredibly adorable. It's awesome you're playing her. <3 au_avenger January 21 2013, 02:11:35 UTC
Howard was more or less at home in luxury resorts - the difference was that usually he ended up in his room working and ignoring the fact he was anywhere other than his office. He was just that kind of person. His memories of places like this usually extended as far as the bar and his room.

Today, though, he's been thinking about going to the pool and attempting to teach himself how to swim. It's a valuable skill, if only there weren't so many people around, and there's enough scars on him from working with lab equipment (among other less savory causes) that he's walking around in khaki pants, a black T-shirt and an open silk green button down shirt that, despite costing more than anything Dorothy has on, he treats casually.

He tries to catch her before she slips on any of the cursed puddles that populate everywhere near the pool. "It's fine. Are you okay, miss?"

Thank you muchly. <3 I figured these two were /close enough/ in any chronological timeline to tag. drosyrenfys January 21 2013, 02:54:27 UTC
Her feet are a little clumsy, but she leans forward rather than backwards, tumbling into him, her hands catching in his very nice shirt. It feels like something the entirety of her hometown couldn't afford even if they pooled their money together. It's interesting to see, even feel, in person.

Glancing over his casual attire, she wants to make certain she hasn't smudged any of his clothing, clearing her throat as she moves to stand straight. Okay? Okay. She wants to double-check herself, but checking her legs and her feet might seem a bit odd for having stumbled into a complete stranger.

She's polite enough to curtsy after she shakes her head and takes a careful step backwards, positive her foot isn't aimed for any puddle. "I'm all right, sir. Thank you very much," Dorothy tries, the nervous smile on her face seeming to calm a bit. "I hope I didn't wrinkle your shirt too much."

My iTunes keeps Shuffling to romantic songs whenever I see your tags. Oh God. XD au_avenger January 21 2013, 03:28:05 UTC
He smiles at her nervousness. It's nice to see someone who has some manners and isn't talking loudly about how they've been to Hawaii or the south of France and it's so much better. He'd rather have an awkward moment than another one of those people that makes him ashamed to be in his income bracket.

"Oh, trust me, I've killed enough shirts to know this is barely even a wrinkle. If anyone's going to ruin my stuff, it's usually me." There's a note of self deprecation in his voice, and he grins as she curtsies. "Don't worry about it. I'm just glad you didn't slip and fall into the pool. Somebody else did that yesterday."

And he'd found it hilarious, but only when said person could swim. Otherwise he'd have found it cringe worthy. Even he wasn't that much of a jerk, honestly.

XD Your iTunes is getting shippy. Or it's in love with Dorothy. drosyrenfys January 21 2013, 04:09:10 UTC
If anything was ingrained into Dorothy's childhood, it was to treat everyone with the same respect. Even if he'd been wearing rags in comparison to her hand-made dress, she would still smile and curtsy and make certain he was just as all right as she is.

There's a slight shuffle to her feet, but she nods, her smile relaxing further into an easy grin. He's a nice man, albeit a bit more fancy and maybe a bit better bred than herself, but those things are hardly more than a fleeting thought. Those things don't honestly matter to her.

"I've never been actually swimming before, so I'm glad for that. Thank you again," she says, although she seems a bit unworried about that. Surely if she were to have fallen in, someone would've helped. At least she hopes so, and that's what matters. There's also no reason to worry about something that hasn't happened, and hopefully won't. She curtsies again, holding her skirt at the seams on either side. "I'm Dorothy Gale. How do you do?"

You can do better, Dorothy! He doesn't deserve you! D: au_avenger January 21 2013, 05:05:10 UTC
God, she's cute. And seems like a nice enough gal, even if she doesn't seem to realize that curtsies aren't strictly necessary. He's beyond caring about manners most of the time; so long as someone was being genuine, that was enough for him.

"I can't swim. To tell you the truth I'm trying to figure out a time where no one's in the pool so I don't embarrass myself trying to learn." He could just bribe someone, but then they'd know and, he's sure, laugh about it behind his back. Howard smiles awkwardly at her, unused to this kind of politeness without there being a catch involved. "I'm Howard Stark. A pleasure to meet you, Miss Gale."

Better than iTunes? Bah! No such thing. drosyrenfys January 21 2013, 05:49:09 UTC
Dorothy never thought about that. Learning to swim would be pleasant, but he's right. Her mouth forms an "oh" momentarily. Her expression moves back to a smile easily, no worries on her expression. It would be embarrassing to learn to swim in front of several strangers, wouldn't it?

"The pleasure is all mine, Mister Stark," she offers pleasantly. No catches, of course. Just a nice conversation from a young woman who never learned how to deceive another human being. Her hands get tucked into the pockets of her dress, and she chews the inside of her cheek. "Maybe once it's dark outside, the pool might be more empty. Oh, but you may want to find something else to do in the meantime."

What about chocolate? That's just as good as iTunes. au_avenger January 21 2013, 06:05:27 UTC
"By the time it's dark outside I'll have gotten back to working on something. I bring my work with me and the concept of 'vacation' is lost on me; I'm boring like that. I don't know what else to do to fill the time, quite honestly."

He could drink, but he doesn't want to embarrass himself in front of everyone. It would be far worse than flailing in the pool. For all his money, he is at heart an awkward, prideful guy who doesn't really know how to socialize.

Chocolate doesn't sing though, and M&M commercials don't really count. drosyrenfys January 21 2013, 06:20:57 UTC
Dorothy laughs softly, not at him, but more at his situation. Places like these should be seen with new eyes, not from a hotel room. That would be exciting enough for her, but she's here to see everything, just the way he should.

"There are supposed to be other things, not just the pool," she offers in an attempt to be helpful. "There is supposed to be dancing, horses, and a spa." That last one, though, she's not certain about. She's never heard about that.

iTunes has no flavor. au_avenger January 21 2013, 06:27:23 UTC
"I'm not much of a dancer. I can do it, it just... I don't know, it just never seems to be as fun as people make it look." He crinkles his nose at the mention of horses. "I'm afraid of horses. We have an agreement - I ignore them, and they ignore me. I'm too much of a city boy to be any good with them, and they're perfectly aware of that. You can see it in their eyes."

He smiles, aware it's a stupid fear but not caring much. "What were you planning to do with your time here?"

It has panache and romance, though, I guess? drosyrenfys January 21 2013, 07:42:48 UTC
His little story makes her try to hold back a small giggle. She can't help it much, but only because there are horses on the farm, and she was never very good with them. In fact, Dorothy has never been very good with any of the animals on the farm. She chews the inside of her cheek.

"I was going to explore a bit, and hopefully find out what a 'spa' is," she says sheepishly, but she figures she might as well be completely honest. "There are also fireworks later tonight that I want to stay up to see. I hope you don't have to go hide in your room again. There are so many things to see and do."

ITunes has more luck in love than me. I feel kind of sad now. XD au_avenger January 21 2013, 12:59:19 UTC
"A spa, Miss Gale, is a series of things designed to be relaxing. And make your skin soft and make you feel pretty. And somehow, spa workers are always surprised men aren't onboard with it." He grins, admitting, "the fireworks are usually decent at these kind of things. I'm just not very social, and things aren't really as fun when you're doing them by yourself."

Don't worry about it. iTunes has a better luck in love than most people. /pats drosyrenfys January 22 2013, 11:38:27 UTC
"Oh," she says, but that's really it. She doesn't think she'd feel all right with going to a spa. It wouldn't be as nice as the one in Oz, and they couldn't do the amazing things that could be done there, so she doesn't think she'll bother with that. Instead, she smiles and offers another curtsy. "If you wouldn't mind, Mister Stark, you could see them with me. You could join me for my explorations as well, if you'd like."

She's being polite, but she means it. It's lonely exploring alone, and he is far more knowledgeable in these sort of places as well. It would be lovely to learn more about a beautiful place like this.

"I'd like nothing more," he admits honestly, shuffling his feet and feeling a bit awkward but still offering her his arm to take. "It'd be an honour."

She can't help the giddy little laugh that comes up. It's so very nice of him to join her, and she takes his arm in a heartbeat. "Thank you very much," she says. "I'd like to see the dancing first, honestly. You don't have to dance with me, but I would just like to watch."
